LG Wing – Introducing a new smartphone form factor

Most smartphones have a standard design these days. They include large, edgeless screens, triple or quad cameras. Most of them sport a glass or a metal design. Some manufacturers have recently come up with foldable smartphones, but their practical uses are still very limited, and one also cannot overlook their hefty prices. LG has always aimed to innovate in the technology space. The brand recently launched an all-new LG Wing, which is unlike any other smartphone. The device comes with a display that swivels out, and it is part of LG’s Explorer Project that aims to discover new smartphone form factors and features. LG says the new Wing offers lots of functionalities over tradition smartphones, and here is everything about it.

The LG Wing might look like any other phone at first glance, but things quickly change when you swivel the screen. The phone’s primary 6.8-inch display swivels sideways towards the top of the phone, giving access to a smaller 3.9-inch screen. LG says the mini display lets you multitask in all kinds of new ways. You can play Netflix videos on the primary display, while using chatting apps such as WhatsApp on the smaller screen. You can also use the mini display to take notes while browsing on the bigger screen.

The phone also lets you use both displays simultaneously. For example, you can play YouTube videos on the primary screen while it is swiveled out and use the secondary screen to control the video’s playback, volume and even the screen brightness. Even gamers will appreciate LG Wing’s secondary display. High-end games such as Asphalt 9: Airborne show a mini-map on the secondary screen that allows you to see the opponent’s location and twist and bends of the race track. The secondary display also lets you access LG’s Game Mode for enhancing the gaming experience.

The LG Wing’s displays also assure excellent colour rendition on their OLED panels. Both displays run full HD resolution and LG says they can produce up to 643 nits of peak brightness. This means they are bright enough for comfortable outdoor viewing. The primary display has no bezels and it is curved at the edges for providing a comfortable holding position. It also supports an Always-on feature letting you see notifications, time, weather updates and other information at a glance. LG’s neat software optimization allows you to adjust the brightness on both displays together.

The LG Wing’s swiveling mechanism uses a dual-spring and a hydraulic damper for a smooth operation. LG claims you can swivel the Wing’s display for up to 200,000 times without any issues. The phone also comes with a water repellent and anti-dust coating to improve durability. The LG Wing is also MIL-STD rated, which means it can easily withstand accidental drops and even extreme climate conditions. The device comes with in-display fingerprint reader for unlocking, making payments and downloading apps. The phone weighs 260 grams, and it is comparatively lighter than other foldable screen phones. LG is offering the Wing in two shades – Aurora Grey and Illusion Sky.

The LG Wing features three cameras, and they are designed to take advantage of the phone’s swivel system. The primary 64MP camera offers f/1.8 for low-light photos, while the secondary 13MP ultra-wide camera helps cover large areas. The third 12MP camera also offers an ultra-wide field of view, and it provides landscape orientation when you swivel out the display. This lens allows to pan around digitally using the camera’s Gimbal Mode.

The Gimbal Mode also stabilises the videos using OIS, and it also offers advanced features such as Follow Mode to lock the focus on a subject. The LG Wing also houses a 32MP wide-angle pop-up selfie camera. The phone also features a Dual Recording Mode, letting users record videos from the front and rear cameras simultaneously. This can be a great feature for vloggers who regularly upload videos to YouTube.

The LG Wing runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, and it has 8 GB of RAM. LG says the phone handles every app with ease, and it lets you multitask smoothly using both the screens. The LG Wing uses Qualcomm’s X52 modem to offer 5G support. The device’s Adreno 620 GPU also ensures you can play most modern games in high-end graphics settings. The phone runs on Android 10, and it uses LG’s UX 9.0. LG says the user interface offers a clean look, and it has been optimised to improve functionalities of the two screens. The LG Wing also promises a strong battery life with its 4,000mAh battery. The phone supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 which significantly reduces charging time.

The LG Wing introduces an all-new smartphone form factor. It is way more affordable than foldable smartphones, and it offers lot more functionalities over traditional smartphones.
