The return of the iPhone SE

Apple and affordability have rarely gone hand-in-hand. Apple’s first attempt at an affordable smartphone was the plastic body, iPhone 5C.  Things have changed significantly since the launch of the first iPhone SE. It had an aluminium chassis like the iPhone 5S and it packed powerful hardware like the iPhone 6S. This combination made the iPhone SE an instant hit.

The iPhone SE was discontinued in 2018 and there have been speculations about its successor since then. Apple has put an end to the rumours with the launch of the new iPhone SE in April 2020. Despite rumours of it being called the iPhone SE 2, Apple hasn’t renamed it. The new iPhone SE has is bigger in size, packs flagship hardware, and even takes premium features from the latest iPhone 11.

Let’s look at what the new iPhone SE has to offer.

The 2020 iPhone SE design resembles the iPhone 8. The new phone has an aluminium frame, with a glass body at the front and back . The device is available in Black, White and (Product) Red colours. The new iPhone SE has a centered Apple logo, identical to the newer generation of iPhones. The device is also more durable, as it comes with IP67 water and dust resistant ratings. This means the new phone is now completely dust-proof and can easily take accidental water splashes. The 2020 iPhone SE skips on the headphone jack, but Apple bundles a lightning to 3.5mm adaptor to connect your auxiliary headphones.

The 2020 iPhone SE comes with a 4.7-inch Liquid Retina HD Retina display with a screen resolution of 1344 x 750. Typing messages and using the phone is a lot easier on a bigger screen. The Retina display has always produced natural colours. It features Apple’s True Tone display, which automatically adjusts the white balance depending on the surrounding environment and lighting. The display also supports a wider colour gamut along with Dolby Vision and HDR 10. You can easily spend hours watching YouTube videos, scrolling through Instagram images and playing games without any eye strain. The display on the iPhone SE also supports Haptic Touch functionality. This feature works like 3D touch and you can use it to access quick actions on the home screen, preview links on WhatsApp, Safari and access features in the Control Center.
The 2020 iPhone SE comes with a single 12MP f/1.8 camera. The camera unit is the same excellent one as on the iPhone XR. The phone features a bunch of camera modes such as the Portrait mode, which helps clicking DSLR-like bokeh photos. You’ll also find features such as Live Photos and Smart HDR. The iPhone SE also features a True Tone flash, which enhances picture quality in low light. The camera can record 4K video at 60 frames per seconds. It supports optical image stabilisation which stabilizes footage even if you have shaky hands. The camera also supports slow-motion and time-lapse video capturing. The front 7MP camera clicks wide-angle selfies and it also comes with Depth Control support.

The 2020 iPhone SE is powered by Apple’s flagship A13 Bionic processor. This is the same processor powering the flagship iPhone 11 models. Apple claims the 8-core processor can perform 5 trillion operations per seconds and it accelerates both, the phone’s performance and efficiency. All this means you can run most apps and play graphic-intensive games for hours without noticing any stutter. The new iPhone SE comes with 3GB of RAM for handling multitasking. The base model comes with 64GB of internal storage but you can choose between 128GB and 256GB models too. The new iPhone SE lacks Face ID from newer iPhones, but it has a quick fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. Touch ID can be also used for filling passwords, opening pass-code protected apps, making app purchases from the Apple App store, and even confirming online payments.

Apple has ensured the 2020 iPhone SE ships with future-ready connectivity. The phone comes with Wi-Fi 6 for seamless wireless connectivity and Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting peripherals. The iPhone SE 2020 is an LTE device with dual-SIM connectivity. The dual-SIM functionality is enabled by a physical nano-SIM slot and eSIM. The iPhone SE also supports NFC which is handy for making quick payments and pairing NFC enabled devices.

Apple claims the iPhone SE battery should last about 13 hours when watching videos, 8 hours when streaming, and 40 hours when playing music. The new iPhone SE also supports fast charging which should provide 50 per cent charge in 30 minutes. Fast charging requires a separately sold 18 watts charger though. The 2020 iPhone SE also supports wireless charging. You can wirelessly charge the device with any Qi-compatible wireless charging accessory.

The 2020 iPhone SE is surely going to be a strong product in the iPhone line-up. It brings powerful hardware, a better camera, along with a premium dust and water-resistant design. With Apple’s long-lasting OS support and the flagship A13 Bionic chip under the hood, the iPhone SE can be a future-ready option that can last years.
