Sony TWS earbuds have been the audiophile’s top choice for a reliable wireless music experience. Sony’s flagship earbuds, the WF-1000XM4 offer benchmark-setting Active Noise Cancellation along with premium audio quality. Affordable models like the LinkBuds come with an unusually-looking ring-shaped speaker, aiming for an all-day comfortable music experience without blocking out the world. Sony is now offering the best of two worlds in the form of the new WF-LS-900N TWS earbuds. These earbuds are also known as LinkBuds S, and they aim to make Sony’s flagship features more affordable. So, how well does this mid-range offering stand against its rivals?

You can easily mistake the WF-LS900N earbuds for the WF-1000XM4. They are similarly shaped but are 40 per cent smaller than the WF-1000XM4. The smaller footprint makes them significantly lighter, making them more comfortable. This should be helpful, especially if you prefer wearing earbuds during working hours. The earbuds now don’t protrude out as much, fit in more snugly and stay in place even during activities like long runs. Sony also includes multiple ear tips so you can find a personalised fit and for improving passive noise isolation.

The earbuds also come with on-board touch controls, making controlling music easy. A tap on the left earbud changes the noise cancellation modes, while a double tap on the right earbud skips to the next track. You can customise these functions using the Headphones Connect app. The app also lets you adjust bass levels and offers presets for Outdoor Stage, Club and Arena-Style sound.

These earbuds are constructed well, with a matte finish to prevent fingerprints. With an IPX4 water resistance rating, they can easily take on sweat and accidental splashes. The charging case is also matte and comes in Black or Beige colours. The case has a pebble-like shape which makes them pocket-friendly. It has a LED charge status at the front and a Bluetooth pairing button at the rear. Sony says the earbuds are made of recycled materials. The packaging material for example, is void of plastic, making the entire package environmentally friendly.

The Sony WF-LS900N sports a 5mm driver, despite its compact size. Sony says the driver unit features a high-compliance diaphragm that helps deliver rich audio with solid bass. The device also comes with Sony’s Integrated Processor V1, the one also powering the premium WF-1000XM4 earbuds. This CPU enhances sound quality, reduces distortion and delivers top-tier noise cancellation.

With the noise cancellation turned on, you can enjoy your favourite playlist or podcast in near silence. This feature also comes in handy in crowded spaces like offices, where you can wear earbuds for more silence and focus. The WF-LS900N also support a Natural Ambient Sound mode, so you have conversations and be aware of the surroundings without removing the earbuds. A Speak-to-Chat feature automatically pauses the music as soon as you speak to someone, so you can have conversations without touching the earbuds.

Sony has also introduced an Adaptive Sound Control function that senses your activities and automatically adjusts ambient sound settings. It also claims to recognise locations such as your workplace or favourite cafe and adapts to the situation.

The Sony WF-LS900N also support an Auto Play feature that resumes music the moment you put on the earbuds or finish a call. Since the earbuds also come with a proximity sensor, they stop playing music when you remove either of the earbuds.

These earbuds support the latest Bluetooth 5.2 standard and claim a range of about 32 feet. Sony says the earbuds’ support for LDAC audio coding technology allows for transmitting approximately three times more data than conventional Bluetooth standards. There is also support for DSEE Extreme which upscales compressed digital music files and restores high-range sound lost in compression. They can also be paired to two Bluetooth devices at once.

The Sony WF-LS900N support Google’s Fast Pair feature for quick connectivity to Android phones. You can also find the earbuds by playing sound or by checking their last location in Google’s Find My Device app on your smartphone. There is also Microsoft Swift Pair, that helps pair the earbuds with your Windows 11 or Windows 10 laptop and tablet.

The Sony WF-LS900N has 6 hours of continuous music playback time and stores another 14 hours in the case. Sony says a quick 5-minute charge gives you up to 60 minutes of playtime. The Sony Headphones Connect app also notifies you when the charging case drops below 30 per cent.

The Sony WF-LS900N are perfectly designed mid-range earphones with great sound and supreme noise cancellation. They offer nearly all the premium features from its flagship sibling and yet are priced only at Rs. 16,990*.
