Gaming keyboards are fun accessories to add to a gaming laptop or PC setup. Most gaming keyboards these days use mechanical switches, which add their own flavour of customizations, feel and performance. It’s no surprise most gaming premium keyboards today ship with mechanical switches today, and so anyone looking for a good keyboard, not just gamers, can look at gaming keyboards as viable options. There is a growing market for keyboards, but one look around and it should be clear that they are expensive, and there are many of them to choose from. Zebronics is a brand that is known for making great products at great value pricing, and it is good to see that they have their own take of a premium mechanical gaming keyboard called the Zeb-Max Chroma. It sells at Rs. 9,999* which sounds like a bit, but it has got pretty much everything and more you might expect from mainstream brands.
The Zebronics Zeb-Max Chroma is a 104-key, full-sized keyboard, with the entire range of function keys, even a complete numerical pad. A lot of the cheaper gaming keyboards, and even mechanical ones, can be purchased in smaller formats, such as 60%, 75%, TKL (Tenkeyless) and others. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your daily usage. A full-sized keyboard has a numerical pad that is essential if you are working with a lot of numbers. A lot of games also allow binding keys and functions to it, which can be handy. This is especially true in complex, competitive games like DOTA 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The keys can be used for signalling or sending quick text communications to your team or purchasing items in game.
Some of the other things evident on looking at the keyboard is the large wrist rest. Most keyboards do not have one, and since mechanical keyboards are tall, there is a sharp edge that your wrist needs to turn upwards, to type. This might not seem like an issue, but over time you can develop wrist pain and RSI (repetitive strain injury) problems. A built-in wrist rest is always a good thing. What’s more, this one has RGB LED lights in them, so it is functional but also very cool to look at.

No gaming keyboard is complete with RGB lights, and we are glad to report, the Zeb-Max Chroma comes complete with them. There is a range of customizability also present. Zebronics says you can choose between 18 RGB LED modes. You can also change the colours of the keys, and the effects. This is great if you want to play late into the night with the lights turned off, and still type. It is also great if you have friends over, or if you decide to take the keyboard to a gaming event or a LAN party. It is sure to get a lot of attention. There is even a programmable mode that you can make changes to. Five brightness levels are also present for the LEDs.
The keys on the Zeb-Max Chroma are mechanical, and of the blue variant. This means they are tactile and have a distinct click to them. Anyone who has a lot of typing to, will like this keyboard. The Function keys also have a multimedia keys layout, that you can use to quickly perform basic tasks from anywhere on your PC. The key caps can be removed and the switches as well. This means, not only can you replace the keys with 3rd party options with different colours and themes, that you can purchase. It also means, you can replace the mechanical key switches with others. The other key switches can exhibit other characteristics such as being quieter, smoother or linear.
Not everything about the Zeb-Max Chroma is about the LED lights, features and keys. The keyboard has a braided cable, that will not knot up easily, and they can be reliable in the long run. After all, a lot of people opt for mechanical keyboards they are sturdy, and going to be used for several years. The base of the keyboard is lined with rubber grip, so it will not slide round your desk, even the USB port is gold-plated. The keyboard has a rated refresh rate of 1000Hz, like any high-grade gaming peripheral. The keys are also tested and designed to last an estimated 80,000,000 presses. There are other nifty features, like the Windows key lock. It stops the Windows key from working, which is a pain while gaming since an accidental press can pull you out of a game and back on Windows.
In a space where gaming mechanical keyboards cost a ton of money, Zebronics offers a solution in the form of the Zeb-Max Chroma that is cost-effective, is packed with features and easily available.
