Oppo Reno 8T – Setting a new benchmark

The upper-mid range smartphone segment has undergone change over the last few years. Some models are too feature-packed to be labelled as mid-range devices. With such phones gaining momentum, more and more brands are joining this race, but none have been as successful as Oppo with its Reno 8. These devices have set a style statement, but this year’s Reno 8T brings improved performance to the package with a bigger camera sensor that even flagship models lack. Priced at Rs. 29,999*, where does the Oppo Reno 8T stand?

The Oppo Reno 8T is a premium-looking 6.7-inch upper mid-range device. Bigger phones can get uncomfortable to hold, but this doesn’t, thanks to its curved edges. The phone’s chrome frame enhances durability and is also a delight to look at. Despite its size, the phone weighs only 171 grams. It is also 7.7mm thin, making it the lightest and slimmest phone in the segment.

The Oppo Reno 8T is available in two colour options. The Sunrise Gold colour is brighter, reflecting different colours from multiple angles. The Midnight Black variant is subtle and should be your choice if you love darker shades. Both shades are equally stunning, and the phone ships with a clear case that lets you flaunt its colours without worrying about scratches. Oppo has also worked on the camera bump, making it less protruding than older-generation model. A new glossy strip also flows below the camera array to give the phone its unique look.

Cameras have always been Oppo Reno devices’ distinguishing features, and the same applies to the 8T. The device comes with a 108 MP primary camera offering an f/1.7 aperture. Oppo says this is their first phone with a 108 MP unit, using NanoPixel Plus technology. This technology is said to make the camera more responsive, capturing nearly 96 per cent more light for improved low-light photography. This camera supports multiple camera models like Portrait, Pro, Extra HD and Panorama. There is also a 108 MP Mode giving more clarity and flexibility to crop images.

The secondary 2 MP camera is a depth sensor, enabling bokeh effects in portrait shots. You also get a 2 MP macro camera for close-up captures. The phone can record up full HD videos at 30fps. You can also record 120 fps slow-motion videos at HD resolutions. If you record vlogs or tutorial videos, the device’s Dual Video Mode should come handy. For selfies, there is a 32 MP camera offering a wide FOV.

The Oppo Reno 8T has a top-notch display that even some flagship phones lack. It’s a 6.7-inch AMOELD screen offering a full HD+ resolution (2412 x 1080px). The display supports 1.07 billion colours and comes with 100 per cent DCI-P3 coverage. This makes it very colour-accurate, allowing users to have a premium content-viewing experience. The display supports 950 nits of peak brightness, promising solid outdoor visibility.

Gamers will also appreciate the display’s 120 Hz refresh rate. This feature makes gaming a lot smoother than regular 60 Hz panels. The 360 Hz touch sampling rate is higher than most phones in the segment. Oppo says the display also supports an Adaptive Eye Protection System with 2160 Hz High-Frequency PWM dimming. It helps reduce eye fatigue by adjusting brightness to the ambient lighting.

The Oppo Reno 8T is designed to deliver a powerful performance. It can easily run most high-end apps and games smoothly. The phone comes with 8 GB of RAM, and you can add up to 8 GB of virtual RAM with the Extended RAM feature. Oppo says this feature allows you to have up to 20 apps running in the background. The phone comes with 128 GB of UFS 2.2 storage, which ensures fast boot-up times and quick data transfer. There is also a dedicated microSD card slot on the device supporting storage expansion up to 1 TB. The device runs on a 4800 mAh battery and ships with a 67 W SUPERVOOC charger. Oppo says the phone can charge from 0 to 100 per cent in just 44 minutes. The phone is also said to support Oppo’s Battery Health Engine that claims to improve battery’s lifespan.

The Reno 8T is a 5G device, supporting a wider range of 5G bands for better network reception while travelling. For wireless connectivity, the phone also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 5.1, with support for SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC codecs. On the software side, the phone runs on ColourOS 13 on top of Android 13. It introduces new features like Auto Pixelate that automatically hides the names and profile pictures in chat screenshots for privacy.

The Oppo Reno 8T is undoubtedly a strong contender in the sub-Rs. 30,000 segment. The phone looks is more premium than its rivals and its upgraded camera system gives it a huge leap in the race.
