Acer has a history of making laptops since a very long time. Acer laptops have been particularly popular because they tend to be affordable, although Acer does not frequently launch models in the market, across various product lines. When they do however, they are focussed. There is always something so interesting, simplistic, and old-school about them. The Acer Aspire 5 is a modern laptop from 2021 that has a lot going for it, with enough punches to throw at its competition.

The Acer Aspire laptops from yesteryear were heavier and thicker, but in 2021, things have improved to a point where DVD drives are a thing of the past. Hard drives are replaced by solid state drives, and large attached batteries are replaced by compact internal high-capacity batteries. The Aspire 5 is slim and lightweight, for what is a no-nonsense everyday use, work, and home laptop. There are multiple variations of this laptop and the model we are talking about is the NX.A1GSI.00D. This Acer Aspire 5 is a 15.6-inch screen laptop but it weighs about 1.6kg. It’s about 1.79cm at its thickest point and that makes it an easy laptop to carry around, dump into a bag and get on your way. The Aspire 5 has its classic Silver colour scheme. It’s not boring like the black laptops we are used to, but it’s also not flamboyant with bright colours, trying to grab everyone’s attention. The Aspire 5 looks fine in the hands of a student, a working professional, or as a desktop replacement at home that’s left in the living room or study.

Not everything is about the exteriors though. The internals are respectable. The processor for example, is an 11th generation Intel Core i5 1135G7, a quad-core processor clocked to speeds of up to 4.2 GHz, when the need arises. It’s coupled with 8 GB of RAM, with provisions for upgrades up to 20 GB. This combination is potent enough to take on any application you throw at it. The memory upgrade serves as a window of opportunity that you can use in the future if the applications you use demand more memory. It can also help future-proof the laptop further.

The Acer Aspire 5 is ideal for browsing, watching movies and shows on, chatting, taking calls, even programming and doing some light video editing. The graphics performance comes courtesy of Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics solution. It’s no gaming chip, but it will boost performance in image and video editing software, but also some older gaming titles or ones that don’t demand cutting-edge graphics processors. There is no dearth of exciting games, many of which are indie titles with reasonable requirements. The Intel Iris Xe is way superior to the older integrated graphics solutions, so you may be surprised by what it’s capable of. Acer sells a range of Aspire models with varied specifications, so you may find a model that comes with a more powerful graphics solution.

The 15.6-inch screen runs a resolution of 1920 x 1080, using something Acer calls a ComfyView panel. The resolution is fine for a screen this size. It is large enough, making for a grand movie and TV watching experience. The display should also make using the laptop for long hours a comfortable experience, without straining your eyes. The bezels on the display have shrunken, resulting in an 81.61 per cent screen-to-body ratio. This is a big improvement, resulting in a more compact laptop, not to mention improving the immersion. This is truly a laptop made for 2021.

One of the other major upgrades worth noting is the inclusion of a 512GB SSD, which is both, fast and ample for storing applications, games, and media. The NVMe solid-state drive helps make the laptop slim and lightweight, but the advantages really are the massively improved performance over hard drives, also lowered energy consumption and a noise-free, vibration-free operation. Software, games, and the OS itself load in no time. You can even get Windows 11 running on this in no time, taking advantage of the speedy SSD.

A laptop needs to be extremely flexible with its connectivity options, wired and wireless. Modern improvements include USB 3.2 ports, even a Type-C port. You can connect a range of storage, and other peripherals, without the need of adapters. Wireless connectivity is handled by the Wi-Fi 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6). It is way faster than the older 802.11ac technology, and the latency is also reduced. The benefits maybe noticed if you try gaming online. If you need to transfer a ton of data over the network and need a stable connection, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity is also built in, so you can experience 1000 Mbps speeds. Battery life is important if you need to work on the move. The Aspire 5 has a 3-cell, 48Wh batter that Ace claims can run a maximum of nine and a half hours. Real-world performance may differ based on your usage.

The Acer Aspire 5 is a refreshing change from the laptops that we are typically used to seeing. This is a modern laptop that conforms to the norms seen in 2021, and it’s not expensive, considering what you get for the price.
