Microsoft Surface Laptop Go – Goes where you go

The Microsoft Surface line of products holds a special place in the hearts of many. There is something about the aesthetic, the performance and the look that make it the ideal Windows product. It’s Microsoft that develops and maintains Windows and if there were a manufacturer to create the optimum hardware for the software platform, it ought to be Microsoft. The Surface Laptop Go, as the name suggests is designed for portability and flexibility.
One look at the Surface Laptop Go and it’s clear, it was designed to be modest and pleasant. There are no sharp edges or unnecessary bulk anywhere in sight. The Surface Laptop Go is the laptop you carry with you everywhere you go, to work, to the café, to the couch or bed. It’s the kind you open and it’s ready for you. The entire package weighs a little over the 1.1kg mark, so it’s barely any weight at all. Many laptops can be thin but the Surface Laptop Go takes things to the next level. It’s barely 15.7mm at its thickest point which is less than most traditional laptops. The body is made from polycarbonate with recycled materials, so it’s strong, light but also easy on the environment. The lid of the Surface Laptop Go is made of aluminium, so there are no compromises on rigidity and strength.

The new Surface Laptop Go runs on 10th generation Intel Core i5 processors, specifically the 1035G1. It is a 4-core processor with multi-threading, so it totals to 8 threads. It’s also based on the 10nm fabrication process, so it’s quick, and power-efficient. It’s what helps the Surface Go maintain its impressive battery life. The processor is fast enough for all the productivity software you might need, as well as for software development. The laptop runs Intel’s integrated UHD graphics solution which may not be for gaming, but it’s perfect for some video and image editing, and it will also run 4K movies. You can still run some basic games and older titles if you want.
The new generation of the Microsoft Surface Go are available as two models, the THH-00023 and the THJ-00023. They are similar in specifications, apart from the storage. The THH-00023 comes with a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive), while the THJ-00023 comes with 256GB. Both storage capacities are ample for all your favourite software and for storing data. The real benefit of the SSD is its performance. SSDs tend to be several times faster than traditional hard drives, but they also consume less power, generate little heat and are completely quiet and vibration-free. The extreme performance can be witnessed as Windows boots in no time, and software load as if they were already running.

All models come with a 12.4-inch PixelSense display, running a resolution of 1536 x 1024. That is a decent resolution but what’s more impressive is its aspect ratio. Unlike other laptops, that use narrower aspect ratios of 16:9, this one is a 3:2. That means, it is a lot taller than most other screens and that is a good thing when you re browsing large pages or scrolling through large spreadsheets.
The Surface Laptop Go also uses a 10-point, touchscreen, so the possibilities are endless. You can use it to quickly launch software, but you also can browse the web a lot quicker. Scrolling, zooming in and out, swiping and multi-tasking is a lot more intuitive with a touchscreen. Windows 10 is designed to work with touchscreen devices, but it is also equally tweaked for trackpads. Most user experience suffers from poor quality trackpads, but not the one on a Surface product. The trackpad supports multiple touches and so you can use all of Windows 10’s touch gestures to get around it quickly.

While the specifications are quite impressive, the Surface Go isn’t all about them, it’s about how it feels and operates. This is an ideal first laptop, or as a gift for someone, looking for a no-frills mainstream laptop. It is also the kind of laptop that you might buy for a student headed to college.
There are some really nice things about the Surface Laptop Go. Take for example, its Type-C ports that you can use to connect adapters, peripherals or even charge. You also get a headphone jack, so you can plug in about any pair of earphones or headphones. There even is a nice fingerprint scanner that is built straight into the power button. That lets you power on the laptop, but also sign into Windows.
Video calling is enabled using the 720 HD f/2.0 aperture camera. The wide aperture is what allows you to make quality video calls even in low light. Microsoft has equipped far-field Studio Mics so your voice is picked up at high quality, even if you are sitting at a distance. You won’t not have to bend down and shout into your laptop to be heard.

Some of the things you do not see on many other laptops is the inclusion of Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). This is the future of Wi-Fi and it offers higher speeds and better coverage than traditional Wi-Fi standards. Microsoft claims some seriously impressive battery life as well. As per their tests, the Surface Laptop Go can go up to 13 hours on average use.
