Microsoft’s Surface Laptop debuted nearly five years ago, and over the years, they have remained – slim and light. Microsoft is now hoping for the same image for its new fifth generation, Surface Laptop. It claims to be more than just an incremental update with design changes, upgraded connectivity standards, and newer generations hardware. With laptop prices skyrocketing, Microsoft has maintained last year’s prices making these new devices even more appealing. There are two models on offer and here’s everything about them.

The Microsoft Surface Laptops have always impressed with their design. The new models are thin and their lightweight dimensions offer durability with all-aluminium chassis. The 13.5-inch models come in Platinum, Graphite, and Sandstone colours. A new Sage colour has also been introduced, which stands out from the traditional shades. The Platinum model comes with a fabric-finished keyboard, while all other models have metal keyboards. The 15-inch models are available in Platinum and Graphite shades. All models come with a mirrored Windows logo on the lid giving the devices their distinctive character.

The keyboard on these devices is as responsive and spacious as the previous models. The keys are well-spaced and backlit, making typing in the dark easy. Microsoft also continues offering a glass-finished trackpad on the newer Surface Laptop 5.

The laptop now comes with a Thunderbolt 4 port, which means you can connect two 4K 60Hz displays to the device. This port also ensures fast data transfer speeds, so you quickly offload data from your cameras or external storage devices. A USB Type-A port is also present for connecting a printer or an external keyboard. Microsoft has also included a 3.5 mm jack on the left.

The right side is as clean as before, with Microsoft’s proprietary Surface Connect port for charging. There are improvements on the wireless front too. The device now comes with the latest Wi-Fi 6, offering high speeds on congested networks and improved battery life. The laptop also has Bluetooth 5.1 for wireless audio devices. There is also an HD web camera with dual, far-field Studio microphones for a clearer video conferencing experience.

Both, the 13.4-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop models use Microsoft’s PixelSense Display technology. They offer a screen resolution of 2,256 x 1,504 with a pixel density of 201 ppi. Apart from the size differences, both models offer similar features. They deliver 100 per cent sRGB support, making these laptops perfect for using colour correction tools. There is also support for Dolby Vision IQ to make your content-watching experience immersive.

Both models run 3:2 aspect ratio screens, which only a few devices offer these days. This gets you more vertical area and room, to fit and view more content. You can view articles, books, spreadsheets and documents without scrolling as much. It also eases multitasking, as apps like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint side-by-side, and vertically to improve your workflow. A tall screen is also very suitable for using image editing and 3D modelling tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Autodesk AutoCAD.

These laptops come with a touchscreen display, making navigation straightforward. You can launch apps, toggle settings and even use touch gestures. Artists and designers will also find this feature convenient for their work. These laptops are also compatible with the Surface Pen. They are more accurate and handy while using image editing tools. With Gorilla Glass 5 protection, the screen is also more resistant to scratches.

The new Surface Laptop 5 brings much-needed performance improvements. The 13.5-inch model runs the Intel Core i5-1235U CPU. It is a 10-core CPU offering speeds of up to 4.4 GHz. For power users, the 15-inch model with Intel Core i7-1255U CPU would be ideal. They both come with Intel Iris X graphics, which has enough to smoothly handle photo and video tools.

Both models are available in 8 GB and 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. You can choose between 256 GB or 512 GB SSD storage options. Since these SSD drives are removable, you can expand the storage in the future. A TPM 2.0 processor is also on-board for data protection. It also works with Windows Hello face sign-in feature, so you can securely unlock the device.

The new Surface Laptop 5 also brings in better battery performance. Microsoft says the 13.3-inch model offers up to 18 hours of battery life while the 15-inch models can run up to 17 hours under typical usage conditions. Charging speeds have also improved, as the included 60 W charger can deliver up to 50 per cent of battery life in just half an hour plugged in.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is way above all the thin and lightweight devices. It brings much-needed performance improvements, making it capable of handling heavy workloads. The laptop’s top-tier touchscreen display, powerful battery life and elegant design are unmatchable. Prices for the 13-inch models start at Rs. 1,03,990*, while the 15-inch models start at Rs. 1,72,990*. All models are now available for pre-order at www.reliancedigital.in.
