Lenovo Legion 5 Pro – Subtle design, limitless performance

When we think gaming laptops, we imagine large and flashy laptops. Not all of us are gamers who want a million colourful lights on our laptops. Sometimes, we need something subtle but with the performance of a gaming device. That’s where laptops like the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro come in. It’s a high-end gaming laptop with all the raw power for handling heavy workloads. This CPU is paired with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, which means no performance hiccups while playing AAA titles. Like most modern gaming devices, the laptop also supports NVIDIA’s MUX Switch feature, routing graphics from the GPU to the CPU to conserve power when there is no performance demand. The laptop comes in two configurations. The high-end model has 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD. The mid-spec variant comes with 16 GB RAM and has the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. To keep components cool, Lenovo has introduced an all-new Legion Coldfront 4.0 cooling system. Lenovo says it includes a wider pipe layout blended with more powerful fans that are 140 per cent more effective. Their blades are also 40 per cent slimmer than the previous Legion Pro devices, resulting in more cooler and silent operation. You also get the flexibility to switch the cooling models using the Lenovo vantage app. The device runs on Windows 11 Home OS and it comes with nearly no bloatware.

The display is one of the most important components of a laptop, and luckily the Legion 5 equips the best in its class. It’s a 16-inch IPS screen running 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. The display comes with 100 per cent sRGB support making it ideal for the colour correction work. Lenovo says it has also been X-Rite calibrated for absolute accuracy. It is also a VESA-Certified HDR screen, which means you can enjoy watching HDR content from streaming apps like Netflix. Lenovo says the screen is also TUV Rheinland certified, helping reduce the harmful effects of blue lights.

The screen’s 16:10 aspect ratio is also perfect for web browsing. Since there is ample space, you can easily arrange apps side-by-side, boosting your productivity. Having a wide aspect ratio also comes in very handy while working on lengthy video timelines. The display also supports a 165 Hz refresh rate, so gamers can have a smooth and fluid gaming experience. Additionally, there is also support for NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium for tear-free gaming.

Despite its large screen, the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro manages to keep its compact dimensions. It weighs 2.49 kg and is comparatively slimmer than most 15.6-inch and 17-inch gaming laptops. The laptop uses an aluminium-magnesium alloy chassis which makes it sturdy. Lenovo’s fit and finish have always been top-notch, and this laptop should be no different. The device comes in a grey colour and has a matte finish which helps to keep fingerprints away. There are no flashy LEDs or logos on the laptop, so it will easily blend in within office environments.

The keyboard on the Legion 5 Pro is also impressive. The keys have a concave curve which provides solid feedback. The keyboard comes with RGB backlighting, which can be controlled using the Lenovo Vantage app. The trackpad is also large, so you can quickly scroll through pages, spreadsheets, photos and video timelines. The laptop comes with an 80 Wh battery that Lenovo claims should offer 9 hours of battery life.

Lenovo has ensured you get all the modern-day connectivity ports with the Legion 5 Pro 2022. On the left, the device has a pair of USB Type-C 3.2 ports, supporting multiple external displays and fast data transfer. These ports can also be used to charge the device. On the right, there is a USB Type-A port along with a headphone/mic jack. You’ll also find a webcam shutter button, so you can manually turn it off when it isn’t in use. The laptop also has a pair of USB Type-A ports at the rear of the device. This placement comes in handy as you get more tangle-free space for the mouse during gaming sessions. The HDMI 2.1 and Ethernet port are also placed at the rear. On the wireless side, the laptop has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
