Here’s how to choose a good hair straightener

Many of us prefer getting our hair straightened at salons, while some others use hair straighteners at home to style hair. Hair straighteners are also known as flat irons and are ideal for all types of hair. They are easy to use and easy to maintain. Modern hair straighteners come with attachments and features, suitable for styling your hair. There are a few things to consider before selecting the hair straightener.

Choosing a hair straightener has a lot to do with your hair texture. If you have thin, delicate, colour-treated, or naturally straight hair, you may require a hair straightener with either low or adjustable heat settings. Thick and curly hair requires high temperatures and slightly wide heating plates. Hair straighteners come with two heating plates made of different materials such as ceramic, tourmaline, and titanium. Some models use infrared technology, which is easy on the hair.

You can also consider wet-and-dry irons. The most common ones are ceramic plate hair straighteners. They are effective on thin, slightly frizzy, and curly hair because they are quick to heat up. They are effective at straightening hair by distributing heat evenly. Some straighteners, however, are only ceramic-coated. They are cheaper, but the coating on them may wear off over time.

Hair straighteners with tourmaline plates are frictionless. They use smooth surfaces like glass, which makes them ideal for fine or colour-treated hair. They not only help straighten your hair but make them smooth and shiny.

Hair straighteners that use titanium plates are considered to be most effective. They heat up quickly and maintain consistent temperatures. They are pricier and used by hair professionals. You won’t need them unless you have very thick, curly, or coarse hair. These hair straighteners have multiple heat settings so they are easy to switch between.

The dry and wet irons are highly recommended because they can dry and style your hair simultaneously. You still need to dry your hair with a towel before using them. These irons are ideal for wavy hair, giving you silky-smooth results or for frizzy hair, but at lower temperatures.

The width of the plates used in hair straighteners is just as important. Wide plates can style large portions of hair in less time. If you are a frequent traveler, a compact hair straightener with thinner plates may be preferable. Also, irons with wide plates and rounded corners offer more grip and prevent snagging, compared to flat irons with sharp edges. You may need to spend some time to get a hang of flat irons.

Temperature settings are important too. You might think that a hair straightener running at a high temperature is better. Of course, they are effective at straightening, but if you use such straighteners regularly there are chances of your hair getting damaged. A hair straightener with multiple heat settings will let you fine-adjust the temperature to your needs.

Many of the hair straighteners available are multi-purpose. You can crimp, wave, or get your hair curled using a hair straightener. They come with multiple attachments such as pre-styling dryers, curlers, brush combs, and crimpers. Some of the models are designed to be portable so you can carry them along when travelling. If you plan on buying a hair straightener without attachments, opt for a dedicated hair curler since it works for all hair types.
