Hostel life is great. Gossips, chit chats, watching movies on the laptop with your roomies is ofcourse fun and exciting, until you get those midnight hunger pangs then, the story gets entirely different isn’t it? With the mess/canteen shut, and no packet of snacks to grab and munch on your only hope is that one roommate who stores some yummy snacks in that one cupboard which ofcourse you don’t have access to and is also the one who does not get lured easily! But still, with hope in heart and humanity you tell her ‘Bhuk lagi hai yaar’ (I’m hungry dude) and you even might have tried negotiating by offering to clean the room or by offering one of your favourite apparel or merchandise which apparently your roommate too had eyes on just to snack on something and kill your hunger pangs for once. Instead what if you are told that you can easily prepare a couple of quick snacks with just one appliance and that there’s no need to barter and let go of your beloved stuffs? Wondering what appliance am I talking about? Well, here’s the curtain raising moment….it’s an Electric kettle! Surprised? Will, trust me, this compact kitchen appliance is your go to. From breakfast to dinner you can easily prepare quick meals with this perfect hostel mate.

Here’s a look at the variety of dishes you can cook with the help of an Electric Kettle.

Boiled Eggs

Boiled Eggs are probably the one of the most preferred options for many isn’t it? It’s filling, it’s nutritious and it’s quick to prepare. But, did you know it’s possible to boil eggs in the electric kettle? Yeah, that’s right! You can prepare your favourite boiled egg for breakfast in a jiffy. Here’s what you need to do;

Step 1: Fill the Electric Kettle with water (enough for the eggs to submerge)
Step 2: Gently pop in the required amount of eggs (preferably minimum 1 maximum 2 eggs) for it to boil evenly.
Step 3: Switch on the button and boil the eggs placed in the electric kettle. Ensure to turn on the button every time it switches off automatically and repeatedly boil the eggs for approximately 13-15 minutes.
Step 4: Strain or Pour the water and carefully remove the boiled eggs and place them in a bowl of cold water as it helps to easily peel it off.
Step 5: Serve as you like and begin your day in a healthy way.

2)Oatmeal

Oatmeal is another quick and healthy variant for breakfast. If you are someone who prefers having a healthy start of the day with a bowl of oatmeal then all you need to do is

Step 1: Fill the kettle with at least 2 cups of water and keep it for boiling
Step 2: keep a bowl of oatmeal aside
Step 3: As the Kettle automatically switches off after a certain period, pour the hot water in the bowl of oatmeal and stir it well
Step 4: Your oatmeal is now read to consume. You can relish this bowl of wholesome goodness with honey, dryfruits or however you prefer.
Pro tip: You can always substitute milk for water in case you enjoy thicker and softer oatmeal.

3)Munch on Rice for Lunch

I am sure many of you’ll will agree with the fact that rice is one of the most easily prepared dishes. Well, the next time you crave for some spicy rice just try preparing it in the electric kettle. Yes, you can even cook rice in this compact portable appliance. No, I am certainly not hinting for Khichdi / khichri (a well-known Indian dish prepared with rice and variety of lentils) here but rice flavored with some spices and veggies. So, here’s how you can try preparing Pulav with the help of an electric Kettle.

Step 1: Soak the rice for around 20 minutes in water
Step 2: Cut the desired vegetables and spices such as bay leaf, clove, green chilly, coriander etc. ready.
Step 3: Add the soaked rice, spices, chopped vegetables, water and salt (as per your taste) in the Electric Kettle.
Step 4: Ensure that you cook the rice for 20 minutes and then serve.

4)End Your Mid-Night Cravings with Maggi!

Maggi is literally the lifeline for many who prefer mid-night snacking. If you are one of them then satisfy your late night hunger pangs with a bowl of Maggi noodles. It’s one of the easiest food items to cook and too in a jiffy. So the next time you experience late night hunger pangs just:

Step 1: Heat water in the electric kettle and add a packet of Maggi to it.
Step 2: Close the lid of the electric kettle and cook the Maggi till it has soften.
Step 3: Next, add the Maggi tastemaker and cook it for about 2 minutes
Step 4: Serve hot and enjoy!

5)How about Pasta for Dinner?

Planning a pasta dinner with your roomies tonight? Well, why not try making a healthier version by adding some sweetcorn to it? Sounds interesting? Here’s how you can prepare a scrumptious lip-smacking pasta in an electric kettle.

Step 1: Add sweetcorn (as required) along with a little butter in the electric kettle (ensure to add enough butter so that the corns don’t stick to the bottom of the electric kettle). Cook it for few minutes till the sweetcorn is soft enough to consume.
Step 2: Remove the sweetcorn aside and add pasta along with the appropriate quantity of water as required and boil the pasta.
Step 3: Once boiled thoroughly, drain the water and add a small amount of olive oil, salt, pepper and spices of your choice e.g., chilly flakes, oregano etc. along with the boiled sweetcorn.
Step 4: Add Cheese and enjoy a quick bite of your favourite dish.

6)Craving for Something Sweet?

Be it someone’s birthday or you and your roomies passing unexpectedly with good grades or maybe winning an intercollege match in hostel every small moment of joy calls for celebration isn’t it ? And every celebration is incomplete without sweets. Keeping this in mind, here’s how you can quickly make delicious Payasam Kheer a.k.a rice pudding in an electric kettle.

Step 1: Cook the cleansed rice with milk instead of water in the electric kettle. Once the rice is cooked well strain it and set it aside.
Step 2: To make the base pour milk and water into the electric kettle and allow it warm. After a while add sugar (as required) and bring the milk to boil
Step 3: Add the boiled rice into the boiling milk. Stir the content constantly to avoid it from sticking it to the bottom of the electric kettle
Pro tip: To check if the rice is cooked or not mash it with a spoon if it mashes easily that means the rice is cooked. If not you need to keep stirring and checking until cooked.
Step 4: Once cooked properly remove the kheer from the kettle and relish the sweet moment with your room mates.

Now, the next time you visit home and if you happened to find an electric kettle in the corner of the kitchen or stored away in some random place in the house bring it out and take it to your hostel room and say good bye to midnight hunger pangs because with an electric kettle at your disposal you can prepare some quick snacks and easy recipes without any mess and hassles.
