Video Calling – Staying in touch while maintaining social distancing

We don’t know long we might have to stay indoors during the COVID-19 crisis. If you are bored and trying to socialize with your friends, family, and colleagues, now is a good time to use video calling apps. When we last checked the list of trending mobile apps on Apple and Google’s app stores, a lot of them were video calling apps. It’s a sign that people are using ways to connect with their friends and family. We decided to try and list out the best ones.

Bunch


Bunch is a video chatting app that might appeal more to younger audiences. The app has a colorful and fancy interface which is quite easy to use. Signing up doesn’t take much time, since it supports Facebook and Google logins. It even has multi-player game support to it. It includes games such as Mars Dash, Trivia, Draw Part and Flappy lives, where you compete against your friends. You can also video chat with your friends while playing PUBG: Mobile and Fortnite. Bunch can accommodate up to 8 of your friends and it is available both on the Apple App and Google Play Store.

JioMeet

JioMeet is an easy-to-use video conferencing app that makes remote working fun. You can sign-up using your phone number or e-mail account. The app also gives you an option of signing in as a guest user. The JioMeet app comes with WebRTC support, which means you can run this app on any web browser, even your laptop or PC. The call host has controls for the participants audio and video feeds. A regular user can connect to up to 5 participants, while a business user can access up to 100 participants. FaceTime

FaceTime is a fun-to-use app with lots of features. It’s ideal for socializing. It lets you create live photos from your FaceTime calls and you can also change your face into an Animoji. The app has other interesting features which lets you add filters and stickers to your FaceTime calls. You can make and receive FaceTime calls even from your Mac or iPad. If you are using the app on a Mac, there is also an option of recording your video calls. It’s a great app to have quick video chats with your friends and family. It also lets you create groups to have FaceTime calls with up to 32 participants. This app only runs on Apple devices though.

Google Duo

Google Duo is a simple video conferencing tool which is available for Android and iOS devices. It’s a cross-platform app and you can even run it on a web browser. Google Duo can also make calls from smart devices such as Google Next Hub Max. Like most popular video conferencing apps, you can quickly sign up with your phone number or e-mail account. Once you log in, the app scans your contact list. You can add friends who have already signed up on the Google Duo app. This is an easy-to-use app and you can add up to 8 participants, which is a decent number. The recent low-light mode update lets you make video even in poor lightning conditions.

Houseparty

Houseparty is a video chatting app which has recently gained popularity. The app has a funky interface which appeals to younger audiences. It comes with four multi-player games. We found Trivia and Quick Draw to be quite interesting. This app also comes with a screen recording and screen sharing feature. It is best for connecting with family and friends. It lets you add up to 8 participants. The app is available for both Android and Apple mobile devices, as well as Macs. If you are a Windows user, you can use this app by installing the Houseparty extension on your Google Chrome browser.
