The Galaxy S23 is finally here after months of rumours, leaks and speculations. As anticipated, there are three new models, the Galaxy S23 for those who want a regular-sized phone, S23+ for large-screen lovers, and the mammoth S23 Ultra for ones who believe everything should be larger. While there are no big design changes, Samsung has made some notable ones to overcome previous-generation hardware shortcomings. Performance improvements are massive and Samsung’s new OneUI with extended software support could start a new trend among Android devices. Here is all you need to know about the new Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup.

The new S23 range brings in more performance than ever. All three models now use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy CPU, a chipset specially designed for the new Galaxy phones. Samsung says the processor offers a higher clock speed than the standard Gen 2 variant. The chip is also said to be 40 per cent more efficient than the older model and less prone to thermal issues. All this means you can expect smooth day-to-day performance and gaming without any kind of stuttering.

The Galaxy S23 and the S23+ come with 8 GB of RAM, while the Ultra has 12 GB of RAM. All three models come with 256 GB and 512 GB of internal storage. You can also get the standard S23 variant with 128 GB storage, making it the most accessible Galaxy S23 device. If you want more storage, the Ultra variant with 1 TB internal storage will be the more suitable option. All three models use UFS 4.0 storage which significantly improves app startup times. It also makes offloading data faster, which is great for vloggers. The battery performance is as impressive as before. The S23 houses a 3,900 mAh battery, while the Plus model has a 4,700 mAh one. The Ultra comes with a massive 5,000 mAh battery.

The hardware improvements are backed by OneUI 5.1 running on top of Android 13. The new UI keeps simplicity at the forefront, comes with customization options and focuses on delivering a smooth performance. Samsung is now also changing the ground rules in the Android industry by offering 4 years of major OS updates. This means your new Galaxy device should support up to Android 17, making it future-ready than any other Android flagship.

The entire S23 line-up looks as pleasing as before. The S23 and S23+ are perfect for those looking for simplicity and elegance. The standard model is a 6.1-inch device, while the Plus model comes with a 6.6-inch screen. Unlike plastic used in the last gen models, they now use Gorilla Glass Victus both at the front and back like the more expensive S23 Ultra. This year, Samsung has removed the camera island from the rear to maintain design consistency across the entire line-up.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is large and more impressive. It has the same squarish design as its predecessor, but now with less curved glass for a more usable screen area. The device comes with a colour-matched S Pen, offering 2.8 ms latency and 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. The entire Galaxy S23 range comes with an Armor Aluminum frame to improve durability. These phones are also IP68 rated, so using them in rainy or dusty environments won’t be an issue. All models are available in Phantom Black, Cream, Lavender and Green colours. They have a matte finish which looks good and also keeps the fingerprints away. Samsung says the S23 phones are made using more recycled material than before, making them more eco-friendly.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+ plus come with a full HD+ screen, sporting a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. The S23 Ultra’s 6.8-inch display comes with a higher 1440p resolution. All models support 120 Hz refresh rates. These AMOLED panels feature the LTPO technology to adjust the refresh rate to the content. They also support HDR10+, so you can enjoy watching supported content for streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. All models support up to 1,750 nits of peak brightness, so watching content, reading pages and gaming in bright places won’t be an issue.

Samsung has also made major camera improvements to overcome last-gen shortcomings. The entire line-up now relies on Qualcomm’s new ISP (Image Signal Processor), allowing the cameras to be quicker at capturing images. The new ISP also claims to significantly improve low-light imaging and record 8K 30 fps videos without any judder. The standard Galaxy S23 and S23+ get three cameras at the rear – a 50 MP primary, a 12 MP ultra-wide and a 10 MP telephoto. The main has OIS for stability while the ultra-wide lens offers a 120 field of view. The telephoto lens is also impressive, offering a 3X optical and 10X digital zoom.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra come with ultra-capabilities. It has a massive 200 MP primary camera offering an f/1.8 aperture. It is said to have a wider dynamic range and more clarity than last year’s 108MP unit. This camera supports Samsung’s Super Quad Pixel enhanced autofocus, which detects differences in the frame to improve focusing times. Samsung has now also integrated Expert RAW mode in the native app, allowing users to click RAW photos at up to 50 MP resolution.

The Ultra also has the same 12 MP ultra-wide and 10 MP telephoto lenses as the standard models. However, this phone’s additional 10 MP 10X optical lens completely changes the game. Together, these cameras can deliver up to 100X digital zoom which is the best in the segment. Samsung says the new ISP and AI algorithms make zooming into far-away objects stable and smooth. For selfies, the entire S23 line-up comes with a new 12 MP front camera. It supports features like Dual Video, Auto-HDR and 4K recording up to 60 fps.

The Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra set a new benchmark in the flagship Android space. Their subtle design changes make them more practical and refined-looking than their previous generations. The Galaxy S23 and S23+ are perfect for those who want a mainstream design with exceptional performance.
