Samsung Galaxy S devices have represented the premium Android smartphone space for more than a decade. They rarely fail to please fans, with their best-in-class hardware and head-turning design. Samsung follows the tradition with the all-new Galaxy S22 series. The S22 and S22 Plus claim to be all-rounder devices that offers a great experience without its hefty price tag. The S22 Ultra is made for Galaxy Note series fans who want an ultra-sized phone with best the productivity features. So, which one suits your needs the best? Let’s find out.

The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus come with lots of subtle design changes. They have curvier edges and their contour-cut camera design blends in seamlessly with the rear. Instead of a glossy finish, Samsung has favoured a matte finish so the phone is resistant to fingerprints and smudges. This premium design comes with Gorilla Glass Victus for protection against scratches and accidental falls. They are also the first Galaxy Series phones to use Armour Aluminium frame, which is said to be lighter yet stronger than standard aluminium. These phones are IP-68 water and dust-resistant rated too.

The S22 Ultra is entirely different from the Galaxy S22 and S22+ cousins. It has a bigger and angular shape, reminding us of older Galaxy Note series phones. It is the first Galaxy S series phone to house an S Pen stylus at the bottom. Samsung says the S Pen input latency has been reduced from 9ms to 2.8ms, resulting in a more natural writing and sketching experience. The phone support features like Air Actions, which lets you use the stylus like a wand to switch between apps and camera modes. Despite housing an S Pen, the device is surprisingly just 8.9mm thick. This means you should have no issues while sliding it into your pockets.

The S22 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the Plus model comes with a slightly bigger 6.6-inch display. Both offer full HD resolutions and use Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. The Ultra uses the same panel, but has a large 6.8-inch screen, offering a QHD resolution. All phones support HDR10+, so you can enjoy watching high-end content from platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. They come with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 240 Hz touch sampling rate to make gaming smooth and responsive. With the S22 phones, Samsung has also introduced a Vision Booster feature for improving the outdoor visibility. These phones also support Eye Comfort Shield, an AI-based feature that reduces blue light to reduce eye strain.

Samsung is improving their camera with the new S22 series phones. The S22 and S22 Plus offer 50 MP wide lens and sensors for their main cameras, paired with 12 MP ultrawide and 10 MP telephoto cameras. Samsung says the new cameras are offer significantly brighter and bolder photos. They offer up to 3X optical zoom with 30X digital room. Last year’s 10MP selfie camera has been dropped for a 40 MP unit. This camera offers a wide FOV, so fitting in large crowds shouldn’t be a big issue.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a 108MP wide-angle lens as its primary camera. You will also find a 12 MP ultrawide camera with a 10 MP telephoto and a 10 MP periscope lens. The additional 10 MP camera allows the Ultra to offer 10X optical zoom along with 100X Super Zoom. The Ultra is more of a professional photography phone. It comes pre-installed with an Expert RAW camera app that saves photos in DNG RAW files, so you can have more control over colours in post-production apps. Samsung has also introduced a Nightography feature that is said to capture significantly more light than the previous flagship cameras. The Ultra is also capable of recording 8K videos at 24 fps. All phones support OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) with features like Subject Tracking.

The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus come with 8 GB of RAM across all configurations, and you can choose between 128 GB or 256 GB storage options. The Ultra starts with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, but you can also go for higher-end models that offer 12GB of RAM. It’s available with 256GB, 512GB, or even 1TB of storage for an extra cost. All three phones come with Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 chipset, a 4nm processor promising to deliver top-end speeds and performance. These kinds of specs will surely translate into a buttery smooth gaming performance.

The S22 phones run on Samsung’s new OneUI 4.1 over Android 12. It introduces new themes and colour pallets to match your wallpaper. The RAM Plus feature has also been upgraded and it now lets you use up to 8 GB of on-board storage as RAM. On the privacy front, Samsung has added a Privacy Dashboard that gives you an overview of apps that make use of camera, microphone, and location services. Samsung is promising four major Android OS updates along with 5 years of security patches. This makes the Galaxy S22 series of phones as futureproof as their closest rivals.

All three Galaxy S22 devices support 5G connectivity. You will also find all the other high-end connectivity standards like Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC for quick payments. The Plus and Ultra model also comes with UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) technology, so you can precisely track you backpack, keys or anything else that is attached to the Samsung SmartTag.

The Galaxy S22 comes with a 3,700 mAh battery, supporting 25W fast charging. The Plus model has a bigger 4,500 mAh battery, with 45W fast charging support. The Ultra model, as its name suggests has the biggest battery among all the S22 devices. With 5,000 mAh, it promises nearly 12 hours of runtime. All three phones support wireless charging, along with reverse wireless charging support. This means you can wirelessly charge compatible phones and accessories like truly wireless earbuds with your phone.

If you want a phone that won’t break the bank, the Samsung Galaxy S22 fits the bill. The phone is also more pocketable and offers the same performance as its bigger Galaxy S22 siblings. If you want a Galaxy phone with a larger display and bigger battery, the Plus model is the device you should go for. However, if you have always been a Galaxy Note series fan and the S Pen, the S22 Ultra is the one. It is the largest Galaxy S series phone with pro-photography cameras and among the best Android smartphones ever. Don’t forget, the the Galaxy S22 range comes in all kinds of attractive colours, but you won’t find the exclusive Green colour in any of the three models, anywhere else, except at Reliance Digital.
