A lot of us prefer mid-range smartphones for their value-for-money proposition. They can offer flagship-like performance, running high-end games and apps smoothly. But, now they even bring pro-grade cameras, great screen quality, and battery life, making the competition even fiercer. Oppo wants to take on this segment with the all-new A78. It is one of their first 5G devices, but its highlight is its premium design which is closer to its flagship sibling. While this sounds good, can this phone compete against the ever-growing mid-range segment?

The Oppo A78 5G claims to deliver an all-rounder performance. It runs on the MediaTek 700 CPU, one of the most efficient and powerful processors in the segment. Its performance is enough to run daily social media apps and even popular games smoothly. Many entry-to-mid-range phones tend to heat up when connected to 5G networks, but this shouldn’t be an issue with the A78 thanks to its effective cooling system. Oppo says the new cooling system also helps in achieving consistent performance and good battery efficiency.

The device comes with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, which is more than what you get with most phones in this range. This capacity is enough for a smooth multitasking performance. The phone glides between apps, Chrome tabs and games smoothly. The phone also supports the RAM Expansion feature which lets you add 8 GB of virtual RAM when required. The device has 128 GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage which is also the best in the segment. Additionally, it also comes with a dedicated microSD card slot that supports storage expansion of up to 1TB.

The phone is a dual-SIM 5G device with support for Wi-Fi 802.11ac. It also supports the latest Bluetooth 5.3 standard, which most new mid-range devices are missing out on. You get support for codecs like LDAC, AAC, SBC and aptX for a lossless wireless music experience. The device comes with a large 5,000 mAh battery promising days of battery life. The phone ships with a 33W SuperVOOC charger which claims 0 to 52 per cent charge in 30 minutes. Oppo has also included a Super Night-time Standby mode that significantly drops power consumption for an extended battery life.

The display of this device doesn’t fail to impress. It comes with a 6.5-inch display which meets the 100 per cent DCI-P3 standard. This means you can expect natural colours and an immersive content-watching experience from this device. There is also support for Widevine L1, so you can stream content from popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Video at great resolutions. Oppo A78 also offers a couple of display modes, so you can tune the colours to your liking.

The A78’s display also supports a 90 Hz refresh rate. A fast refreshing screen is a must-have feature these days, as it makes scrolling through webpages, photos and overall UI a lot smoother. This will also benefit gaming. The screen supports up to 600 nits of brightness, so viewing content in brighter environments shouldn’t be an issue. The screen bezels on this device are also minimal, giving it a more premium look.

The device is surprisingly slimmer and lighter than most phones in this range. Its rear looks like glass but uses polycarbonate materials, making the A78 5G less prone to cracking in cases of accidental falls. The camera bump is negligible, and the array is highlighted by a glossy finish. The device comes in two colours – Glowing Blue and Glowing Black. Both variants offer a matte finish which should keep fingerprints away. The device’s flat edge resembles Oppo’s premium phones, and it houses a fingerprint sensor.

The screen uses Panda Glass for protection from scratches and falls. The device also has an IP4X waterproof rating, so you can use it in the rain without worrying. The A78 5G also ships with a clear case which further improves the durability without hiding the device’s premium looks.

The Oppo A78 5G also comes with a good set of cameras. Its primary 50MP unit offers an f/1.8 aperture and promises crisp images. This camera also supports a Night Mode along with a Pro Mode that lets you take manual control over the camera’s settings. The secondary camera is a 2 MP unit which adds depth to portrait photos. The phone can record full HD videos up to 60 fps. It also supports slow-motion video capturing at HD resolution. The front houses an 8 MP camera with a wide field of view.

The Oppo A78 5G is the perfect device for those who want performance without compromising on the style. It is one of the best-looking mid-range phones which can smoothly handle everyday apps with good battery life and camera performance. The phone is also competitively priced at Rs. 18,999*, which makes it more accessible than some of the upper mid-range phones.
