Oppo A33 – Premium features, entry-level price

We have seen many mid-range smartphones designed to look like premium devices, with flagship features at relatively affordable prices. Smartphones priced a lot lower are now also following this trend. The Oppo A33 among the first budget devices to attempt this. The device comes with 2020’s newest entry-level processor and a faster refresh rate screen, a feature rarely seen on budget smartphones.

The Oppo A33 sports a 90Hz screen. Faster refresh rate screens make a huge difference when you are moving up from a traditional 60Hz screen. It makes the screen appear a lot smoother, and it is noticeable when you play games, scroll through webpages, images and menus. The screen has minimal bezels, and it comes with a punch-hole display design, that allows for fitting a large-screen phone into a smaller chassis. The Oppo A33 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor, which is Qualcomm’s newest entry-level chipset. Oppo claims the new chipset offers up to 70 per cent increase in performance compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 450. This means the Oppo A33 can handle most apps and games. The new processor also promises more power efficiency, as it is based on an 11nm process compared to the 14nm fabrication process of the Snapdragon 450. The phone also comes with the Adreno 610 GPU that is seen on many high-tier smartphones. These specifications are strong enough to let you play high-end games such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Asphalt 8: Airborne, and Minecraft.

The Oppo A33’s 3GB RAM will allow you to multitask seamlessly and it can run apps in the background without slowing down the phone. The phone comes with 32GB UFS 2.1 storage, which helps load apps quickly and it also improves read and write speeds. The phone also has a dedicated microSD card slot so you can expand the storage up to 256GB.

 

The Oppo A33’s exteriors also manage to impress with its slim and lightweight design. The phone’s curvy edges offer a comfortable grip, and they also make one-handed use easier. The device is made mostly of plastic, but it has a shiny rear that resembles flagship phones. The front glass comes with Gorilla Glass 3 to protect it from scratches. The rear of the device houses a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device and making payments. The device is available in two shades – Mint Cream and Moonlight Black. The Oppo A33 houses a large 5,000mAh battery despite being just 8.4 mm in thickness. It supports 18W fast charging, which significantly reduces charging times.

Like most new Oppo phones, the A33 ships with Oppo’s ColorOS 7.2. Oppo claims the new OS has been cleaned up for a stock Android-like interface. Oppo has introduced some useful features such as AI App Preloading that preloads commonly used apps, so they load quickly. ColorOS 7.2 also brings an updated Intelligent Battery Saver mode that automatically puts certain apps to sleep when they’re unlikely to be used. Oppo has also introduced a new Super Battery Saver mode, which is meant to be used when the phone’s battery is extremely low. It promises nearly 1.5 hours of battery life with 5 per cent battery left.

 

The A33 comes with triple-cameras. The primary 13MP camera has an f/2.2 aperture, and it also offers 119 degrees of wide-angle view, which means you can click large groups of people easily. The phone also has a 2MP macro camera that allows capturing close-up images from as close as 4 cm. If you love clicking DSLR-like photos, the Oppo A33 also has a 2MP depth camera for portrait photography. Oppo A33 houses an 8MP f/2.0 aperture front camera. Both, front and rear cameras support advanced features such as HDR and full HD video recording at 30 fps.

The Oppo camera app offers most features such as Night mode, advanced HDR and even a Pro mode that lets you take control of most camera settings. Oppo has also introduced a new AI Fix mode, that automatically repairs photos by removing haze, noise, graininess, and blur.

The Oppo A33 supports dual-SIM LTE connectivity. The device has Wi-Fi 802.11ac for wireless internet, and Bluetooth 5.0, for connecting audio devices and other peripherals. The phone comes with stereo speakers and having an extra speaker can make a significant difference when you are playing games, listening to music or watching movies on your phone.
