Motorola has been restructuring their smartphone line-up lately, experimenting with foldable models like the Razr 40 Ultra. Now, they’re attempting to take on the upper mid-range segment with the Edge 40 5G. This phone looks more expensive than it is priced at. It has a slim design, comes with powerful hardware specs and even a camera that’s ahead of most mid-rangers. What else does it have? Let’s find out.

This Moto Edge 40 5G stands out with its Edge branding. The device is just 7.6 mm thick and weighs only 167 grams. This makes it one of the slimmest and lightest mid-range phones of 2023. Its curved screen design not only looks premium but also offers a comfortable grip. The device is available in four shades. The Lunar Blue and Viva Magenta are some of the brightest shades and they come with a matte finish which should keep fingerprints and smudges away. The Eclipse Black and Nubula Green variants come with a vegan leather back which stands out in its own way. The soft-touch back feels premium and also protects the device from minor scratches.

All models come with sandblasted aluminium frames, giving the phone solid structural rigidity. The phone has an IP68 rating and can survive 1.5m under water for up to 30 minutes. The Edge 40 5G also ships with a protective cover for added protection.

The Moto Edge 40 comes with a 6.5-inch OLED display offering a full HD resolution. The display has HDR10+ support, so you can enjoy HDR content from supported streaming platforms. There are two Screen Modes – Saturated and Natural. You can even adjust the colour temperature for a more personalised viewing experience. The screen also has a 144Hz refresh rate making the overall UI smoother.

Gamers will appreciate this feature too, and since it also supports a 360Hz touch sampling rate. The screen supports Adaptive Refresh technology, so it shifts modes between 60Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz depending on the content being played. This helps the device to conserve power. The display is rated for 1200 nits of peak brightness and also comes with SGS Low Blue Light feature which aims to reduce eye strain. The phone also sports an under-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device.

You will never feel a shortage of performance with the all-new Motorola Edge 40. The device runs the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 CPU, a new 6 nm processor designed to deliver a strong performance. This CPU can easily handle modern games like Battlegrounds: India and Call of Duty: Mobile in the highest graphics settings. The device is available in two configurations. The base model comes with 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of storage, while the top-spec comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Both models use the latest UFS 3.2 storage type which results in fast bootup times and fast data transferring speeds. Connectivity is top spec too, with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC for payments.

The clean software user interface has always been Moto’s selling factor, and this phone is no different. The Edge 40 5G runs Android 13 OS and has a near-stock Android experience. There are a handful of customised features so you can add a personalised look to the UI. The UI also emphasises privacy. A new Secure Folder feature has also been introduced to keep sensitive apps and files from being viewed and tampered with. There is also an option to lock network and security settings as long as your screen is locked. Motorola is offering two major OS updates along with 3 years of security patches, making the Edge 40 5G a solid future-ready device.

The Motorola Edge 40 5G also won’t disappoint photography enthusiasts. The primary 50 MP camera offers an f/1.4 aperture, which is wide for a mid-range smartphone. This should significantly improve performance while capturing low-light images. This 50 MP camera also supports OIS and 4K video recording up to 30 fps. If you are an aspiring vlogger, this configuration is a great starting point. The secondary 13 MP camera offers a 120-degree field of view, perfect for landscape shots. This camera also doubles up as a macro camera for close-up photography. For selfies, the phone comes with a 32 MP camera. This camera is also capable of recording 4K videos at 30 fps.

The phone comes with a 4,400 mAh battery and ships with a 68 W fast charger. The device claims quick charging times and up to 30 hours of battery life. It also claims to be the first phone in the segment with 15W wireless charging support.

The Motorola Edge 40 5G is an excellently made mid-range 5G device. It has a premium design with Moto’s long-known reliability. The Edge 40 5G is also powerful and comes with an impressive set of cameras, backed up by a strong battery life.
