LG UQ80 – An affordable but premium 4K TV with reliability

Prices of smart TVs have plummeted over the years. While lesser-known brands were more aggressive on pricing, you can now buy something like the LG UQ80 4K TV, the brand’s first upper-mid-range TV between the top-tier UQ90 and budget UQ75 models. LG says the UQ 80 TV should be ideal for masses who want to experience flagship-grade features and performance at accessible prices. Its 55-inch model comes in at Rs. 51,000*, lower than any of the brand’s older 55-inch devices. From gamers to movie buffs, this TV claims to have everything for an all-rounder performance. But, in the race for accessible prices, has LG made any compromises?

The LG UQ80 4K TVs are available in 43, 55 and 65-inch screen sizes. All models boast of a 4K resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 and run on LG’s a5 Gen 5 processor. This is the same CPU that has powered some of LG’s premium OLED TVs in the past. It means you can expect the same smooth 4K performance from these new TVs. The CPU also unlocks LG’s AI 4K Upscaling. LG says this feature analyses content frame-by-frame and upscales it to 4K, irrespective of the source. The processor is also responsible for removing noise and optimising contrast for crisp, high-quality visuals.

Like premium LG TVs, the UQ80 series support HDR10 Pro that uses a proprietary algorithm for accurate HDR images. Since most streaming apps support HDR, this should be a useful feature. The TV also comes with the LG Filmmaker Mode that turns off the AI motion processing and reduces auto colour correction, so you can enjoy watching content the way film creators intended. There is also an AI Brightness Control feature that automatically adjusts brightness according to the ambient lightning.

This TV is designed with gamers in mind. It supports ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for low input response and a smooth gaming experience. This feature makes a big difference, especially while playing fps games where quick response times are a key to winning. There is also support for HDR HGiG, so gamers can have HDR gameplay with supported consoles. On the software side, the TV also comes with the LG Game Optimiser feature that lets you see real-time frame rates and adjust screen settings quickly. LG says it also analyses game genres and optimises image and audio settings for a better gaming experience.

The LG UQ80 is a simple yet elegant-looking smart TV. It is slim like LG’s premium TV line-up and has a plain back with dual, V-shaped style feet. These feet can hold the TV up high enough to accommodate a sound bar. The TV has minimal screen bezels allowing the TV to blend in smoothly with home and office interiors. The TV can also be wall-mounted using a VESA mount. The rear is also cleverly designed. It is finished in matte, which makes cleaning it easy. LG has also provided hooks for better wire management.

The LG UQ80 comes with all the modern-day connectivity ports. You will find three HDMI ports, of which two are on the sides for easy access. There are also two USB-A ports on the right, for connecting storage devices. An optical port is also present for easy connectivity to a soundbar. Speaking of wireless connectivity, the device comes with Wi-Fi 802.11ac for a seamless content streaming experience. A LAN port is also present for wired internet connectivity.

The UQ80 runs on LG’s latest webOS which offers one of the smoothest and simplest smart TV experiences. The TV suggests shows and movies based on your viewing history. You get everything from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Hotstar pre-installed on the TV. You can also download additional streaming apps and games for the LG Content Store. The TV ships with LG’s Magic Remote which makes navigating through apps and settings easy. However, you can also play content and change settings on this TV with voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

These voice assistants can also be used to set up reminders for new TV shows and get weather and sports updates. The UQ80 TVs also support Google Home, allowing you to take control of the smart home devices from your TV. The TVs are also compatible with Apple Homekit and even support Apple Airplay, so iOS users can easily cast content from their phones to the TV. These features were often limited to LG’s premium TVs, and it’s good to see them now on mid-range offerings.

The LG UQ80 4K TV also promises a solid sound performance. It comes with 20W output speakers which should be loud enough for a moderately sized room. The TV supports the AI Sound Pro, a feature that promises superior sound quality even at high volumes. There is also an Auto Volume Leveller feature that automatically adjusts the sound, so the volume remains consistent even as you flip through channels. The TV also comes with Bluetooth 5.0, which means you can have a quick and clean external sound setup.

The LG UQ80 4K TVs are perfect for users wanting flagship-grade features without the exorbitant price. The TVs bring LG’s reliable image processing technology that results in a natural-looking content experience. The TV also looks premium and is loaded with smart features, making it a complete all-around package. Prices for the 43-inch variant start from Rs. 44,240*, and all models are available at www.reliancedigital.in. You can also experience the TVs at your nearest Reliance Digital store.
