iPhone X – Apple of our Eye

Apple’s iPhone is an iconic device and it’s secured a place in history as one of the most innovative products ever. It’s the device that has made Apple the company it is today. As years progressed, Apple has seen its competition make attempts to grab its seat, by making hops and leaps. This means Apple has had to innovate faster and take drastic, sometimes risky bets than they would’ve liked. The iPhone X is its biggest and riskiest one yet. The iPhone X launches at the back of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, just a month later, where new iPhone launches would’ve been a year apart. Apple even decided to skip the iPhone 9! iPhoneX_waterproof The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus suits loyal and long-time iPhone users and to those who’ve wanted to upgrade to an iPhone. It’s an iPhone 7 and 7 Plus under the more sturdy and classy skin. The Apple iPhone X is for those who want nothing less than the most premium offering, the most innovative product Apple has. The iPhone is almost a fully-functional prototype-kind-of phone. Priorities are clear as Apple wanders into uncharted territories pulling off all the tricks up its sleeves. This phone has a 5.8-inch screen that is larger than the one on the 8 Plus, at least on paper. Except this time around, it has this bezel-less display except for a narrow notch up top where the earpiece ought to be. An array of sensors sit in its place, which include an illuminator, a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, a microphone, speaker, the front-facing camera, an infrared camera and a dot projector. These are present purely for functional purposes – the iPhone X couldn’t be what it is, without them. iPhone_display The edge-less screen covers most of the available real-estate. Cutting-edge technology isn’t perfect, but the iPhone X has one of the best displays you can find on a phone today. It’s an OLED display that Apple calls Super Retina Display, so it has extremely good contrast levels and spot-on colour rendition. The 2436 x 1125 resolution is extremely dense so you get fine details and sharpness on a massive screen. It is wider than other phones and even other iPhones. The only downside if any is that the edge-less design works best when apps are optimized for it or you might notice unused screen area on some apps.

This transition to updated, compatible apps might take place over weeks, maybe months so it is something to keep in mind. The screen also supports HDR so you can expect HDR content from providers such as YouTube and Netflix to really pop. iPhoneX_waterproofThere are some features on the iPhone X that we’ve seen on products for months, sometimes years. Not all is new about the iPhone X – take water and dust resistant for exampleIt’s not a new feature. Another feature is wireless charging, which was something also introduced on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus a while back – better late than never. Wireless charging is particular interesting though, because Apple makes it work on all Qi-compatible chargers so you don’t need to depend on an expensive, proprietary technology.

Other technologies such as Face ID have been introduced by other vendors but none have depended as much as Apple has to, with the iPhone X. With no fingerprint scanner onboard, Face ID has works accurately, all the time. From early reviews, it seems to work well. It works with the help of the front-facing camera and other sensors. The iPhone X uses a bunch of new sensors along with its upgraded processor, the A11 which Apple brands as a Bionic processor. It observes objects and makes maps of them and uses them in features that need it.

Face ID was one such instance, the other being animated emojis called Animoji. What this means is that you can choose an emoji then make facial gestures and movements. It’s also handy when you play augmented reality games where 3D virtual characters are transposed on the environment around you. This is exciting and it’ll be good to see solid titles using these capabilities. There are other features that sound simple on paper, but add much more to the experience of using an iPhone.

The pair of cameras at the back that let the iPhone X click photos of objects up close better as well as offer better depth-of-field, something seen on DSLR cameras with high quality lenses. Better portrait photography using the front-facing camera is another addition. Apple is making sure something as simple as the camera offers the best possible performance and experience. The emphasis on image stabilization for both cameras at the back as well as HDR support, the portrait lighting modes and 4K recording capabilities are evidence of that focus shift. iPhone_X_conclusion The iPhone X is a one-of-a-kind phone coming from a company that’s known to take big bets. The iPhone X is a step in the right direction for users and the industry. The iPhone is an expensive but it’s also very exclusive in a way – no one’s made a phone like this. Despite its minor flaws, it is all-new and it is all-refined and it’s built to impress.
