Gaming laptops tend to be bulky, heavy and sometimes, hideous. Carrying one in a backpack or sling bag can be a calorie-burning task. However, this reputation is slowly changing with laptops such as the new Alienware X15 R1 laptop is a perfect example of it. It is nearly as thin as an ultrabook laptop but with beefiest and most powerful components from 2021. It is a high-end gaming machine for hard-core gamers who want performance with portability.

Weighing just 2.3 kg, the Dell Alienware X15 R1 is one of the lightest high-performance gaming laptops. Dell says the new Alienware charger is also 46 per cent smaller and 25 per cent lighter than older models. This makes carrying the new Alienware X15 R1 around effortless. The laptop’s portability improves further with its Type-C charging support. You can charge the device using your phone’s charger or even a portable battery pack.

The Dell Alienware X15 R1 is built well. The display lid and keyboard bay use magnesium-alloys so, the device holds up well to daily usage. The keyboard deck is treated with a special high-endurance coating that makes it resistant to fingerprints. Dell says it keeps the laptop clean, even if you have sweaty fingers. The laptop’s dual-hinge design ensures the display doesn’t wobble easily. Despite its solid nature, it is possible to open the screen using one hand.

All the ports on the Alienware X15 R1 are placed at the rear. It keeps the sides clean, offering you more space to freely use your mouse. The selection of ports is also impressive, considering the laptop’s thin and light design. The USB 3.1 port allows for fast data transfer to storage drives and other external peripherals. Two Type-C ports allow you to connect the laptop to external monitors. The laptop has an HDMI 2.1 port, that supports 4K 120Hz output to an external display. This means you can play games on a large HDMI 2.1-enabled TV. The device ships with a Type-C-to-LAN dongle, allowing the laptop to connect to wired networks. For wireless internet, the laptop has Wi-Fi 6.

The laptop runs the Intel Core i7-11800H processor, an 8-core CPU delivering speeds up to 4.6 GHz. It also has a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD drive and an additional slot for storage expansion. You can choose the device in two configurations. The base variant comes with 16GB of RAM and more importantly, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. The top-line model has 32GB of RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics solution.

These are pretty high-end specs, and so, you can run high-end games such as Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Watch Dogs: Legion and Control, smoothly. It also has enough power to cut through large video editing and other computer graphics projects.

The laptop manages to keep its components cool using Dell’s Cryo-Tech technology. It uses a gallium-silicone thermal interface paired with a quad-fan system to regulate air flow. Each fan is controlled by AI using readings from the internal heat sensors. It allows the laptop to efficiently dissipate heat and operate smoothly even under heavy loads. These fans work silently, so you don’t sound like a jet engine every time you start a game.

The laptop has a 15.6-inch full HD panel with a 165Hz refresh rate screen for a tear-free gaming experience. Dell says the display produces vibrant colours, high contrast and offers excellent viewing angles. Its 100 per cent sRGB support makes the laptop ideal for using colour correction tools like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Procreate. The display is said to produce 300 nits of peak brightness. It also has Dell’s Low Blue Light feature so you can game for hours without stressing your eyes.

The Alienware X15 R1 features an RGB keyboard for comfortably gaming in a dark room. The keys provide 1.5mm travel for a crisp and firm feedback. Dells says the keyboard support N-key rollover technology that ensures all key presses are detected. You can customise the keyboard’s RBG layout and create macros using the Alienware Command Center app. The laptop also has a large glass trackpad for easy navigation and multitasking.

The Dell Alienware X15 R1 has a 6-cell 87Wh lithium-ion battery. Dell says the 240W Alienware charger supports its ExpressCharge Boost technology that offers fast charging speeds. That means, you can charge the laptop up in no time if you need to get going in a hurry.
