Apple Watch Series 7 – Turning up the dials

Apple’s big event wasn’t just about the new iPhones, it was also about the continued focus on the smartwatch space. Apple unveiled its new Watch Series 7, in style in an online streaming event. If you already own an iPhone, you ought to consider this one, because the Watch Series 7 takes that experience to a whole new level. Not only does it let you interact with your iPhone with ease, it also is a standalone device on its own. It’s geared towards productivity, entertainment and massively on health.

Right out of the box, the new Apple Watch Series 7 impresses as it comes in five colours, Green, Blue, Product Red, Starlight and Midnight. The colours are designed to suit your look and style, just like the strap options that we’ve seen in the past for all the models. This new one is also constructed like a tank. The device is crack resistant, and Apple claims it is using its strongest front crystal ever. It’s supposedly 50 per cent thicker than the Watch Series 6. It may appear rounded and curved on the surface but it’s flat against the actual OLED display. It looks great, but it also is hardy. The device is IP6X-complaint so it can withstand dust and grime. It’s also water-resistant thanks to its WR50 rating, which lets you submerge it up to 50 metres under water. It should be fine for casual swims, but maybe not for scuba diving and deep-sea dives. A rainy day or a sweaty workout is absolutely no issue though. Even the exterior shell is designed to look and feel great. It’s available in three different materials, titanium, stainless steel, and recyclable aluminium.

There are more functional changes though. The screen is larger, because the bezels have been reduced by 40 per cent, and so, the screen is 20 per cent larger than the one on the Watch Series 6. On a watch, that might seem like small changes, but it gives more visual room to use and to interface. The larger screen has other benefits, such as the ability to type using a Swipe keyboard Apple calls QuickPath. Apple is using the power of machine learning to help it figure what word you want to type next, so you don’t need to manually enter every alphabet, all the time. The interface all across has been upgraded to use larger screen, so system apps, even the calculator is more practical and usable.

The display is an Always-On Retina one, so it is brighter than what you might have seen. The display is always on, so you don’t need to move your wrist or hold it up and wait for it to turn on. It’s also 70 per cent brighter when you are indoors, even when you don’t hold it up.

The soul of the Apple Watch Series 7 is all about health monitoring though. There is a barrage of sensors around the watch that help it measure and track all the fine details about your health. Take the blood oxygen level monitor for example, that can notify you of any underlying issues. The sensor doesn’t just take readings when you want it, it’s always keeping an eye on the stats, ready to alert you if any of the numbers dip below ideal.

The other major sensor is the ECG feature, like that a real single-lead electrocardiogram, can generate an ECG for you, on demand. The heart rate monitor maybe like a snapshot, but the ECG can give more minute details. Simply hold your finger to the Digital Crown and an ECG is rendered in about 30 seconds. It’s no replacement to a real ECG at your doctor’s, but it’s handy enough to keep an eye on.

Other low-lying monitors are things like the sleep tracking feature. It tracks how you well you sleep, rather than only on how long. It’s so engaged, it can even recommend sleep timings and schedules, so you can feel refreshed. Some of the other smart things the Watch Series 7 can do is figure is when you’re out cycling or doing a range of other activities. It can detect drops in case you need help. There are also voice assistant features that speak out the key notifications such as the speed, distance covered, etc. You won’t need to keep raising your wrist up to see these stats. If you happen to own an e-bike, the Apple Watch Series 7 is also tweaked to accurately measure the calorie usage.

The Apple Watch Series 7 doesn’t just look great on the outside, there are also a range of customisations that can be done to the software. There are thousands of apps that you can install right on the device, without the need of an iPhone around you. That’s the beauty of the Apple Watch Series 7, but there are also watch faces to choose from. What’s more, you can make your own watch face with the kind of activities you like.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is at the forefront of automation, health monitoring and an excuse to not have to touch your phone for every single notification.
