The iPhone SE has proven that Apple can make affordable phones too. The Apple iPhone was first introduced in 2016 and got a massive update back in 2020. This time, Apple has equipped the 2022 SE lineup with the A15 Bionic processor, the one that powers the flagship iPhone 13 models. That means this budget iPhone is as powerful as the premium and expensive iPhones. There are also battery and camera advances, that claim to make this iPhone significantly better than its predecessor. Does it set a new benchmark? Let’s find out.

Anyone who loves smaller iPhones with a physical home button will be happy to see the new iPhone SE. It comes with a 4.7-inch screen, so it is slim, compact and perfect for one-handed usage. Though the design looks like that of the 2020 SE, Apple has upgraded the iPhone SE 2022 with Ceramic Shield Glass, the same material used on the iPhone 13 models. Apple says the material is made by embedding ceramic nanocrystals into the glass through a high-temperature crystallization process. The result is a tougher glass, which make the iPhone more resistant to bumps and scratches.

The iPhone SE 2022 also comes with an IP68 rating, making the phone resistant to water and dust. This means the device won’t be easily damaged if you spill water, coffee, tea or juice on it. You even don’t have to worry about using it in the rain or while taking pictures during dusty mountain hikes. The iPhone SE is available in Midnight, Starlight and Product Red colours. Like the iPhone 13 line-up, the new SE come with a centred Apple Logo.

The new iPhone SE has the same A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. It is a 6-core CPU that makes the new SE 1.2 times faster than the previous generation model. Apple says the A15 Bionic’s 16-core Neural Engine performs 15.8 trillion operations per second, making it 26x faster than the iPhone 8. Even the GPU performance is 2.2 times faster, so games like Call of Duty: Mobile Asphalt 9: Airborne, Minecraft and Battlegrounds India will run without any issues. Running on the latest chip means the iPhone SE 2022 will receive up to 5 years of iOS updates. Apple’s competitors can barely offer such power and longevity at this budget price point.

The phone runs the latest iOS 15 for enhancing the iPhone experience. Facetime now supports a SharePlay mode that lets share images, videos and files with your friends and family. You can even use this feature to watch a movie together. The updated Live Text feature now recognises text in a photo even without internet access. The iOS 15 update also significantly improves Mail privacy and even has a built-in feature for detecting passwords that could have been compromised.

The 2022 iPhone SE’s 4.7-inch Liquid Retina display runs a screen resolution of 1344 x 750. It has the same 326 ppi density as the previous model, so the images appear crisp and clear. The display supports P3 Colour Gamut and HDR10, which means you can have an incredible colour accurate content watching experience. Like the flagship iPhones, the iPhone SE’s display supports the True Tone feature that automatically adjusts the screen brightness to ambient lighting. The device also supports Night Shift, a feature that automatically shifts display colours to warmer tones to reduce the effects of blue light from the screen. The phone also supports Haptic Touch, that comes in handy while playing games and accessing quick settings.

The iPhone SE also doesn’t disappoint in the camera department. It has a 12 MP f/1.8 camera that works with the A15 Bionic chip to offer incredible computational photography benefits, including Photographic Styles and Portrait mode. There is also support for a Smart HDR 4 feature that automatically adjusts the colour, contrast, and noise of the subject. The 12 MP camera now supports Deep Fusion that uses machine learning to do pixel-by-pixel processing and optimising texture, details, and noise in every part of the photo. This feature also allows the user to capture crisp and clear low light images.

The iPhone SE 2022 comes with an enhanced battery that works with iOS 15 to offer a better battery life. The device also supports Apple’s 20W fast charger, offering 0 to 50 per cent charging in just 30 minutes. It also supports Qi-certified wireless chargers.

The phone supports 5G connectivity, so you can experience faster uploads and downloads speeds and lower latency during gaming. Apple has also introduced a Smart Data mode that automatically shifts the iPhone to LTE when 5G speeds are not needed. The phone also supports NFC for quick payments.

The iPhone SE 2022 is perfect for those who want a smaller-sized iPhone that does not compromise on performance. The A15 Bionic CPU can easily run high-end apps, games, and power premium camera features. With long-term iOS support, this phone is way more futureproof than other mainstream, mid-range phones.
