All about the new Apple iPhone XR, XS and XS Max

When we think of buying the latest iPhone, most of us prefer waiting till September every year when the new models are announced. After numerous leaks and rumour roundups, the wait is finally over, as Apple officially announced their new line-up. Until last year, Apple usually used to launch iPhones in two screen sizes. It had also introduced their futuristic design with the iPhone X. This year, Apple has applied this design to the entire new iPhone line-up, bringing a possible end to the traditional bezel screen iPhones.

The iPhone XS and the iPhone X Max are the new premium offerings, which have some major upgrades over the older iPhone X model. In addition to these models, Apple has also launched a more affordable iPhone X-like model, called the iPhone XR.

With the face detection and edge-to-edge screen as standard, the entire new iPhone range is quite appealing. But before you even think of upgrading, there is a lot to learn about the new iPhones. Read our feature to learn all there is to know.

The iPhone XS and X Max

The iPhone XS and X Max comes with a design which is similar to the iPhone X. While the XS has similar dimensions to the older X, the X Max is broader, with the bigger 6.5-inch display, making it the biggest iPhone ever. Both the iPhones have Super Retina OLED displays with a pixel density of 458 ppi. They have similar glass back designs, with a new gold colour variant along with the usual silver and space gray options.

There is no major upgrade in the camera department as both the iPhones comes equipped with dual 12MP rear cameras. The wide-angle lens has an f/1.8 aperture while the telephoto lens comes with an f/2.4 aperture. Both the phones offer 2x optical zoom along with 10x digital zoom. They also have dual optical image stabilization to make images crisp and clear.

Just like the rear camera, the front camera also don’t receive any major upgrades. Both the iPhone XS and X Max comes equipped with 7MP TrueDepth which is similar to its predecessor.

The iPhone XS and X Max supports 4K video recording at 60 fps. Along with 4K, if you ever wish to record ultra-slow motion videos, they both support full HD slow-motion recording with a whopping 240 fps frame rate. Apple claims to have made software enhancements to make the camera on the new XS and X Max even better, which we will soon cover, when we do the full review of these devices.

With the introduction of the new iPhones, Apple has also introduced their new chipset running on these devices. Apples claims that the new A12 Bionic chip is 15 per cent faster than the older A11, with lower power consumption improvements of up to 50 per cent.

If you ever felt 256 GB of storage was not enough, Apple has added a new 512 GB variant for both, the XS and X Max for users who always demand more storage.

The only major upgrade besides the X Max’s bigger screen is the dual-SIM support. Apple has finally introduced support for two SIMs on all their new devices. Of what is known, Apple is planning on offering an option of two SIM cards using nano-SIM slot and an e-SIM. Network operators such as Jio already has support for e-SIM in India. This is something Jio has supported with the last Series 3, Apple Watch. In China, Apple plans on selling iPhones that support both physical SIMs.

The iPhone XR

This is one of the iPhones to surely grab your attention. The XR comes with a design which is slightly bigger than the XS but has more colour option. Unlike the usual silver, space grey or rose gold, the iPhone XR will be available in blue, white, coral and red (Product Red) colours. The XR comes with glass on back, so by any means, it won’t be a cheaply designed iPhone.

The real compromise the iPhone XR makes, is in its display. It comes with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display with a screen resolution of 1792×828 which is slightly better than the iPhone 8. Having a HD display in 2018 could be a turn-down for many users, however with many identical features to the XS models, Apple has tried to make the XR a balanced proposition for users.

The iPhone XR misses on the dual lenses, but comes with a 12MP rear camera with an aperture of f/1.8. It still offers optical image stabilization along with 5x digital zoom support. It has a 7MP TrueDepth frontfacing camera, which is similar to the XS and the XS Max models.

The iPhone XR can also be a great video shooter as it supports 4K video recording at 60 fps. It can also shoot full HD, slow-motion videos at 240fps which is identical to the premium XS and XS Max.

Users will be hardly missing out on performance as the iPhone XR runs on the same A12 Bionic chip. Though the XR won’t be available in 512 GB capacities, it will have dual-sim option which will be appreciated.

The new iPhone line-up definitely seems interesting, and we really can’t wait for it to arrive in India. For more updates about pricing and in-depth reviews of the new iPhones, keep following us here at www.reliancedigital.in
