Samsung Smart TVs are popular for their innovative designs and cutting-edge technologies. There are present in all kinds of forms – simpler full HD TVs, 4K TVs as well as curved models. Adding to the full HD line-up, Samsung has introduced a new 49-inch K5300 Full HD Smart TV. It is priced at Rs. 74,900* and is tailored with a smooth, clean design to match your lifestyle. Besides a good design, the Samsung K5300 has some additional features, which will cover through our test of this TV. Let us find out if it’s worth buying the Samsung 49K5300 TV at its asking price.

Design

TV_front

The Samsung K5300 Smart TV has a simple design. It comes with a black plastic build all over which Samsung calls Ebony Black. The TV comes with a 49-inch screen surrounded by a slim plastic bezel. At the bottom is the grill design meant for speakers, and it takes a lot of space. It also makes the TV appear larger. The Samsung logo is embossed at the front while the power indicator is positioned slightly towards the right. There are additional speaker grill gaps at the bottom. Both the speakers are positioned facing the front and are close to each other.

The design is minimalist and should match your home aesthetics. The back panel of the TV has a louvre or pyramid-like shape. The base looks the same. We were not impressed with this design, which unnecessarily makes the TV look bulky. Also, there is a small box-like structure at the back with a power plug on it. All other connectivity ports are placed on the right.

The TV takes up some space when wall mounted. The K5300 TV stand is different from the traditional stands seen on most TVs. It comes with four metallic legs that fit on the ends of the TV. The two front metallic legs are slightly longer than the rear ones. Unlike other TV stands, the stand occupies very less space.

The Samsung K5300 Smart TV is bundled with a standard remote. It’s a plastic remote with rubberized buttons of different shapes and sizes.

Features

The Samsung K5300 is a 49-inch Full HD TV with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The TV runs a quad core processor that should help the OS and apps run smoothly. The TV comes with the latest Tizen OS and the interface is quite simple. There are a number of apps installed.

OS_new

Most of the 4K and full HD TVs these days support HDR. This feature helps produce high contrast pictures, which means you get bright and natural looking colours. It is disappointing to see that the Samsung K5300 doesn’t support HDR considering its price. In terms of connectivity, there are only two HDMI and two USB ports. This should be troublesome when trying to connect more than two HDMI devices to the TV. The Samsung K5300 supports HDMI-CEC which lets you control any HDMI-CEC enabled devices connected to a TV using a single remote.

There is also a USB and Bluetooth HID support. HID is short for Human Interface Device and this feature lets connect a wireless mouse, keyboard and a game controller. This is useful because you won’t need to occupy a USB port with a dongle for the device. That way you can connect other devices to the TV’s USB ports.

Besides this, the Samsung K5300 supports a ConnectShare feature which lets you copy content from one storage drive to another, without having to use a laptop or PC. Like other Smart TVs, you can connect your smartphone to the TV and stream content. There is a Samsung Smart View app on the Google Play Store which make things easier. You can share photos, videos and movies stored on your phone or tablet.

Performance

The Samsung K5300 Smart TV is equipped with Tizen OS. On pressing the Home button, you get access to the app launcher with prominent apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, a web browser, etc. All of these are practically useful apps. The interface is easy to use and had things well-organized. You can also install apps from the Samsung app store which is pretty well categorized.

To test the picture quality, we watch some Blu-ray movies and some high-resolution photographs. Movies appeared a little shoddy on the default settings. Colours appeared pale and washed out. We tried setting up the sharpness and contrast levels to bump up the vibrance in the picture. The brightness level although sufficient wasn’t very bright, even with the setting cranked all the way up. We connected a laptop to the TV using a HDMI cable. We didn’t get any of the expert picture settings here. Sticking to the TV’s USB media feature, we noticed a drastic change while going from movies to photos. We had to keep changing the settings all over again, because images look over-saturated with the video settings, and vice-versa.

Switching between images was slow. Still photos showed good detail although there was a blue tint that had to be corrected using the RGB controls. The TV is configured with a Standard picture and we modified this mode through our tests. If you are someone who like bright saturated colours, you can switch to the Dynamic picture mode. Viewing angles of the Samsung K5300 Smart TV are decent.

Loading of apps was rather slow. We used the in-built web browser running different tabs such as Facebook, RelianceDigital.in, Google News, etc. All these worked fine. We also streamed some music videos from a smartphone, which wasn’t very smooth but manageable. In terms of audio quality, the speakers are loud enough for decent-sized rooms. There wasn’t any distortion while playing loud music and the vocals were clear too. There is no smart remote bundled with this TV, so scrolling and typing is bit tricky. Also, there are no dedicated Netflix, YouTube or Amazon Prime buttons on the remote.

Verdict

The Samsung K5300 Smart TV is a good TV for its design and features. The grill structure at the front makes the TV look unique. The 49K5300 is a large screen, it has decent colours and renders good details. The features available are more or less similar to most of the other TVs and nothing very interesting. However, the price seems a bit higher for a full HD TV, when you have the option of either smaller 4K TVs at much lower prices, or the option of an entry-level 49-inch 4K TV for a bit higher.

The Samsung K5300 is also available in a screen size of 43 inches (UA43K5300AR). A TV purchase decision is a long-term one, so tread wisely!
