What you need to know about the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro

Another year passes by and a new iPhone is born. We await patiently wondering what Apple has been up to, while ignoring rumours. The time has come, and Apple complied with the norms it laid years ago. Apple launched three new iPhones – the 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. There is a lot riding on these devices, and for good reasons. Where once a customer had one brand in mind, now has many more. There are many more competing premium smartphones. Apple has made amendments to counter this onslaught. This is quite possibly the first iPhone to talk and emphasize much more on the camera, than any model in the past. It’s also not to say that there is nothing more to the new iPhones. There is! There are enhancements, there are new models, newer colours but it can all be so difficult to take it. We take a quick look through what’s changed with the iconic smartphone, and which one you should buy this year.

The iPhone 11 is the most affordable of the new products. The iPhone 11 Pro is the premium phone with all the bells and whistles, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the larger version of the 11 Pro. There are distinct differences between these models. In just looks, the sizes are the simplest way to identify them. The iPhone 11 is like the iPhone XR in terms of dimensions, in some ways but much more like the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro in others.

The iPhone 11 has a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD display screen, that runs a resolution of 1792 x 828. This is more than enough for most of us, but it’s the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max you really want. They use great screens, something Apple calls Super Retina XDR Displays. These make movies and TV shows pop and render a variety of colours. The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch screen while the iPhone 11 Pro Max uses a massive 6.5-inch one. You might think they both run the same resolution, but the iPhone 11 Pro Max runs a resolution of 2688 x 1242. Both these screens have extreme contrast ratios, so the black levels are ridiculously low, while the whites appear very bright. There is a clear distinction between the iPhone 11 and the pricier iPhone 11 Pro models. The iPhone 11 runs an LCD panel, while the iPhone 11 Pro models run a much better, OLED panel.

It’s all about the cameras on the new iPhones though. The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max both use a 3-camera setup at the rear. These are no average quality cameras like you find on most other phones. There is an ultra-wide camera that should be great for clicking landscapes, architecture and for getting large groups of people into the frame. Apple says these phones captures 4 times more than other smartphones. The regular wide-angle camera is also present, and you also get a telephoto lens camera that lets you capture distant objects better. This last telephoto camera is what’s missing in the cheaper iPhone 11. This is a small omission, but that telephoto lens is what makes the iPhone 11 Pro models stand out. Adding lenses to cameras is no big deal, but the quality, detail and accuracy of the colours is what makes them iPhones. All the cameras use 12MP sensors, so you get large enough photos to share online, view on large screens, even print.

Two of the new emphasized features about the new iPhones is the night mode, which lets you click shockingly well exposed photos with nearly no light at all. Smart HDR improves the quality of HDR allowing more details to be shown across bright and dark areas alike. If you think all HDR features are create alike, that’s not true. The Apple Smart HDR stands apart, producing some seriously impressive results. 4K video shooting is another feature that can’t be ignored, or the 240fps video recording. These are all integral features of these phones. Apple is even introducing something called Slofie which are slow-motion selfie videos.

The upgrades on the iPhone aren’t limited to just the cameras and screen. As always, Apple has improved their processor and this year’s model is called the A13 Bionic processor. It has all the firepower needed to run all your apps, popular games, shoot high-quality HDR photo, videos, slow motion videos and more. The processor is smart, so it understands the scene you’re shooting photos in and makes changes that make your photos stand out. The software and the A13 Bionic processor work together to give you all the performance you need, while also offering great battery efficiency that lets you use the iPhone for a long time, without recharging it.

Of course, each of the devices has a slightly different battery capacity. Apple claims that the new iPhone 11 Pro lasts a good 4 hours longer than the last iPhone Xs. The larger iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 5 hours advantage over the Xs Max. The iPhone 11 has an hour of improvement over the iPhone XR. These are truly impressive improvements and most of us can appreciate this, especially after a day of usage.

The design of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro devices are like the ones of their predecessors except for one component, the rear cameras. The cameras are now housed as an array in the top corner of the phone. There are four interesting colours, Gold, Space Grey, Silver and Midnight Green if you choose the iPhone 11 Pro. The affordable iPhone 11 comes in six bold colours, Product Red, White, Black, Green, Yellow and Purple. The choice of storage capacities stay roughly the same, 64GB, 128 and 256GB for the iPhone 11, whereas the iPhone 11 Pro comes in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Apple iPhones aren’t what they are without the software. The latest iOS 13 was just released for older devices, but the latest iPhones ship with the OS. There are a ton of improvements and features designed specifically for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro devices. You can read all about these changes in our feature on iOS 13, and you’ll also learn how to update your existing iPhone.
