What can you do with a power-efficient laptop?

At a time, where everyone is obsessed with even more power and performance, sometimes, going the compact, low-power, efficient way has its own benefits. It’s not really a compromise, depending on what you are going to be using the laptop for. Let’s talk about low-power, low-cost laptops that you can buy for as little as Rs. 23,000. That’s right, as much as you would like the power, there is a lot you can do with something this affordable. We’re talking about laptops running on Intel Atom and Celeron based processors, so obviously, high-demand graphics editing and CAD software won’t run as smoothly as you may like. Let’s start off with what you can’t do. No, you can’t install a 100 games on these laptops, because some of them only have 32GB of storage on-board them. They don’t even have high-end graphics processors, so you can’t play games at extreme settings. So, what’s the real benefit you may ask? Let’s try and explore the idea a little further.

High-end, high-quality games on your laptop

As absurd and contradictory as it may sound to what you just read, you can in fact play high-end games at the highest possible quality on your laptop. This is possible with the power of the new free Steam software, which includes a feature that lets you run a high-end game on your main gaming PC or laptop, and then stream it wirelessly or through a wired connection to your laptop. It’s called In-Home streaming.

How do you do this? Install Steam (available for free at steampowered.com) on both, your laptop and your main gaming PC or laptop and enable in-home streaming on both of them. Make sure that you sign into sign in using the ID on both machines and that you are connected to the same WiFi router. Now, when you go to the Library, you'll find the games installed on the main gaming PC or laptop. When you click on it, you'll see the option to Stream instead of Play. Clicking on it will start the game remotely on your gaming rig but you'll also find it running on your low-power laptop or netbook. You can control it and play the game in bed, or while chilling on your couch on this laptop.

Basic web browsing and multitasking works just fine!

These low-power notebooks don’t have heavy drives and other components, so they’re extremely slim and light-weight. You can keep them on your lap for hours and they don’t heat up as much, so you relax on a couch chatting with friends and browsing through your favourite sites while sitting around with family or in a garden, or when you're in bed. No need to worry about the heat, vibrations and spinning fans!

Extremely good battery life

One of the best things that you’ll like about these notebooks is the battery life. They’re something like what you find on mobile phones and tablets. Some of these products can really run for as long as 8 to 9 hours on a single charge. Most mainstream laptops no matter what sized batteries struggle to cross the 4 to 5 hour mark in comparison. Let’s not even forget the fact that these products are priced at a fraction of the cost of other laptops that are priced three to four times as much.

Zero maintenance

Pretty much all of these low-power notebooks are solid state in the sense that, there are no moving parts whatsoever - not even a cooling fan. The laptops have low-power processors that don't heat up, so they don't need fans. They don't discrete graphics cards, so you need fans either. The storage on-board is a solid-state memory chip, so not only is the power consumption low, but you'll never have to open the laptop and worry about heating, or fans making noise and need replacing. Assuming that you use the laptop carefully, this kind of system should last you a very long time.

Check out the machines

The Flex 11 and the Flex 13 are possibly some of the best and most affordable products you is perfect for the things we’ve spoken about. Priced at just around Rs. 23,000, it’s built absolutely brilliantly. The Flex 13 has an attractive blue colour scheme, compared to the same old boring glossy blacks we’ve seen all along. The build quality is nothing like what we’ve seen at this price – it’s sturdy, doesn’t flex easily and it feels good. You can also consider a Chromebook which falls in the same price range.
