What are Wi-Fi enabled air conditioners (ACs)?

We all know how unforgiving summers can get in India. The scorching heat and humidity can make it even worse! While an air conditioner can be a saviour, going back home, turning it on and waiting for it to cool your room can be irritating. Do you know that you can come home to a cooled room using a Wi-Fi enabled AC?

The Wi-Fi feature in air conditioners (ACs) can really change the way we use them. You can turn on your AC even before you reach home. If this does not impress you, do you know that you can even save on electricity bills by creating customised power schedules for your AC? Wi-Fi enabled ACs are way more flexible than traditional AC. If you are planning to buy a new AC, here are things you should know that you can only do on a Wi-Fi enabled air conditioner.

Control your AC from anywhere, anytime

Wi-Fi ACs use your home’s Wi-Fi connection to get connected to internet. You can remotely control your air conditioner from your smartphone or tablet, using an app. If you have multiple Wi-Fi ACs at home or your office, you can conveniently control them all just by using a mobile device.

Control your AC with a much simpler user interface

AC remotes usually have a small screen which displays very little information. Wi-Fi ACs can now be controlled with your phone, so you won’t ever need the AC remote. These apps have a much simpler user interface that let you conveniently schedule timers, control fan speeds and even set temperatures based on outside weather conditions. Some selected models even support voice commands.

Reduce your electricity bills

With Wi-Fi enabled ACs, you can create your personal power schedules for ACs. These ACs can be scheduled to turn on and turn off according to your convenience. Some of these models also have a smart analysis feature, which lets you keep a track of the energy usage, trends and it also sets monthly consumption limits.

There are other reasons for electricity bills running high, and that may be due to poorly maintained air conditioners. If you’ve been using one and want to reduce on power bills, don’t forget to read our article on AC maintenance.

How to setup Wi-Fi enabled ACs

Wi-Fi enabled ACs are quite easy to setup, but before you start, make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi router to which you want to connect your AC. Once connected, you can follow these steps. Note that the instructions may differ from brand to brand, and from one model to another.

  • Download the AC application on your phone or tablet. If you have trouble finding the right app, refer to your air conditioner’s user manual or visit the brand’s official web site.

  • Once you download the app, you will need an ID and password to login. If you don’t have one, create one within the app.

  • Enter the login credentials and you will be prompted to select the AC model.

  • The app will then pair the phone with the air conditioner, via the Wi-Fi router.

  • The application will show your AC under the devices list from where you can take control of your AC settings.

While most of the ACs have direct internet support, some of the entry-level models may only support local Wi-Fi. This means you can control such ACs only when you are connected to same Wi-Fi network, so before you make your decision, narrow down on the features you really need.
