For the longest, 4G phones were the talk of the town, but as 5G technology starts showing signs of fruition, a new generation of smartphones emerge. Anyone looking to a 5G future might find it a great idea to upgrade to a 5G-capable smartphone now. 5G was at first, only a feature-set for flagship devices, but that is not the case anymore. Devices like the Vivo Y72 bring the familiar, solid feature set of existing phones, married with cutting-edge chipsets that bring along 5G. Priced at around the Rs. 20,000 price bracket, there is a lot to like in these devices. We take a closer look to see what makes up the Vivo Y72.

The Vivo Y72 boasts of a speedy processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480. On paper, it’s an 8-core processor, which uses two, 4-core units clocked at around 2 GHz. It is thorough in performance, and the capabilities are made better, considering the device ships with 8 GB of RAM, and an additional 4GB, which Vivo is calling Extended RAM. This should help you run all kinds of apps and be able to multitask between them seamlessly. There is also 128GB of storage onboard that comes handy when you want to install a wide range of apps on your device, whether it’s movie players, or games, even store movies and TV shows. The Y72 has a thorough camera setup, and you are likely to be clicking a lot of photos using it. The 128 GB storage space is useful when shooting hundreds and thousands of high-resolution photos and videos.

The front of the Y72 shows a massive 6.58-inch IPS display, running an FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2408. That makes for a potent combination that should show its performance when you are watching high-definition movies or playing the latest games. The pixel density makes it ideal for reading large amounts of text, without having to scroll every few lines. This is no ordinary display either. It’s rated to run at smooth refresh rates up to 90Hz. This change from the traditional 60Hz makes a world of a difference when you are scrolling through news feeds or Instagram or just browsing the web. The IPS panel is also graded to render a 95 per cent NTSC colour gamut. What you can expect is great colours, and smooth performance.

Despite its large screen, the phone isn’t thick or heavy. The Y72 weighs about 185.5g and the device is 8.4mm thick. The Y72 is a comfortable phone to hold on to, with its curved edges, and dropping it accidently is not easy, an issue with imbalanced, massive phones running large screens and batteries. Vivo has efficiently used the space available to house the screen, resulting in a 90.61 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The Y72 design standards are modern and there are two interesting colours to choose from. The Prism Magic has a wide range of colours, like a rainbow, and it might be better suited to younger audiences. If you much prefer a modest, professional look, the Slate Gray option is the one to consider.

The rear camera array consists of a 48MP camera that clicks all everything, including shooting videos. This kind of resolution ensures great detail, that you can use along with creative image editing tools to stand out, when you publish them on social media services or share them with your friends and family. There is also a 2MP bokeh lens that can help you achieve those smooth, professional depth-of-field shots that one might think are only possible on a DSLR. There is also a flash to illuminate up dark scenes.

The front-facing camera uses an 8MP sensor and it has a few tricks up its sleeve. The Super Night mode which is present on both, the front and rear cameras, lets you click bright, detailed photos even in poorly lit scenarios. It uses the RAW image as the source to reduce noise, so photos preserve most of the detail. Some of the other interesting modes are Portrait, Panorama, even a Pro mode that gives you manual controls over all aspects of the camera. The Face Beauty mode which would normally be only for photos, can also be used while making calls on Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.

Any phone with a ton of performance and features can also strain the battery. Thankfully, the Vivo Y72 comes with a 5,000 mAh battery, which is quite hefty. That should help you go on through a day and more, without having to recharge. When it is time to recharge, Vivo has your back with its 18W Fast Charge. It should enable the phone to recharge up to full in no time. If the situation is dire, and you need the phone to keep going, you can turn on the VEG mode that lets you extend the battery by a lot, letting you complete important tasks.

The Vivo Y72 ships with a Type-C connector, that makes plugging it and out easy. There are two SIM card slots as with all phones these days, with dual standby. Other equipment such as the fingerprint scanner, even Bluetooth 5.1 come as standard fittings. Vivo ships the Funtouch OS 11.1, which is a software layer running on top of Android 11. Vivo makes its own tweaks to take the performance a few notches up. Its Multi-Turbo 5.0 for one, optimises performance by preloading apps you use often, so you see instant start-up. There are other practical features too, such as the Ultra Game Mode. You can choose to automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode, so no notifications pop up during your competitive game. There are tweaks to the vibration setup, and there is even an eSports mode.

All things considered, the Vivo Y72 is among the most balanced phones in the market, with 5G capability. You get the best of both worlds, the present and the future.
