As the mercury rises, we struggling to keep our homes cool and comfortable. While air conditioners are a remedy, they are expensive to own and run. This leaves us with the most budget-friendly option to cool homes, pedestal fans. There are many factors to consider before buying a table or pedestal fan.

Pedestal vs table fans

Fans for home usually are of two types – Pedestal and table. While similar, there are some visible differences. Pedestal fans come with a long detachable stand, they are larger and better suited for larger spaces. Such fans usually have a lightweight frame and can be used indoors and outdoors.

Table fans are more suited for smaller spaces like a small shop or an office cubicle. They are generally compact, so you can easily place them in a corner. Such fans can be easily moved around in a house with the help of an extension cord. Table fans consume less electricity, and some models even come with energy-saving modes.

If you have limited floor space, you can go for wall mounted fans. Such fans also deliver a strong airflow, and you can also use them for ventilating rooms. They are easy to install and can also be removed when needed. Some models even come with a remote control, giving you the flexibility to control the speed from anywhere in the room.

Size of the fan

Pedestal and table fans come in different sizes. The most common ones out there are 400, 450 and 600 mm. 400 mm and 450 mm fans are better for smaller rooms so you can install them in kitchens, small bedrooms or office cubicles. If you want a fan for the living room or dining area, you can look for 600 mm models. You can also find pedestal fans with 900mm blades, but such models usually consume more power and are meant for commercial use.

There are also fans with blade-less designs. They are based on a central drums that rapidly sucks in surrounding air and compresses it for a powerful airflow. Such fans are silent and also consume less power. However, they are usually priced higher than regular fans.

Speed of the fan

The speed of the fan is one of the most important factors while choosing the right table or pedestal fan. It is measured in RPM (rotations per minute). Faster the fan speed, more the airflow. Most affordable table and pedestal fans run at speeds between 800 to 1000 rpm. More expensive models can range between 1300 to 2000.

Material of the blades

Table and pedestal fans are made of variety of materials, like brass, stainless steel and plastic. Each has benefits and features to offer. For example, plastic blade fans are affordable to run but may require extra care as durability can be an issue in the long run. Brass and stainless steel fans are more powerful and create high airflow but they are noisier and thus, more suited for open spaces. Some models mention the noise levels, while some offer noise-free operation.

Motor type

Most table and pedestal fans these days come with copper-wound motors. Such fans are durable and last longer than affordable aluminium-wound fans. Some fans also ship with features like Thermal Overload Protection to protect fans from overheating and voltage fluctuations issues.

Removable mesh

Like every other household item, fans collect dust over time, and you need to clean them to maintain their performance. Luckily, most models these days come with removable grills, that can be unscrewed and dissembled to clean the blades. In some models, you can also detach the blades and thoroughly clean them with water.

Oscillation

Most table and pedestal fans support side-to-side oscillation to cover a wider area and deliver effective airflow. It is useful, especially when you have multiple people in a room. Some models also come with tilt function, so you can even adjust the angle to suit you.

These are some of the most important factors while buying a pedestal or a table fan. To explore a variety of fans under one roof, head on to your nearest Reliance Digital store and you can also explore our offerings online by visiting www.reliancedigital.in.
