Sony WI-C100 – Quality, but also feature-packed wireless earphones

The Sony WI-C100 are some of the newest earphones meant for budget users. As earphones have evolved over the ears, there have been a barrage of Bluetooth earphones entering the market but at some exorbitant prices. Most of these offer additional features but the performance hasn’t been all that impressive over a price point. For example, most earphones priced between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 5,000 sound great and as the prices increase, the returns turn fleeting. In such scenarios, a lower priced product brings fewer regrets.

Truly wireless earphones might be great, but they rarely have great battery life. They need to be placed back into their carry cases to be usable for a couple of hours more at most. Traditional Bluetooth wireless earphones are hard to lose, and their design means they can be capable of holding much larger charges than truly wireless earphones. Sony claims their new WI-C100 has a massive 25-hour battery life. This means a single charge should go through a day of non-stop music or a few days of casual listening. You don’t have to worry about cases and the rest – simply charge it once and dump it in a carry bag and go on your way. Charging happens through a simple USB connector, so you can charge these on the go using a battery pack, a wall plug, or even a laptop at work. Sony even says if the earphones run out charge, you can recharge them to play an additional hour on just 10 minutes of charging.

Sound is generated through 9mm Neodymium drivers, and Sony claims they can generate frequencies between the 20 and 20,000 Hz range. These are in-ear headphones, so they are comfortable to wear, and because they wrap around the back of your neck, it’s hard to lose them. You can use them on jogs, walks, cycling and more. The C100 comes with additional pair of ear tips so you can choose one that fits your ear. Connectivity comes in the form of Bluetooth 5.0, with support for A2DP and al the popular audio formats. Performance is no issue, whether you’re looking for pristine audio quality or good range wirelessly.

Features is where the Sony WI-C100 shines. The earphones use Sony’s DSEE (Digital Sound enhancement Engine) which enhances audio quality to make the sound not just fun to listen, but also more accurate, like the artist intended it. The earphones have been tuned for vocals, and details are clear and the sound natural. There are a few settings to play with too, like the presets. They can be tweaked to your liking and there are plenty of good ones that are suited for specific genres of music. There are also a 360 spatial sound personalizing feature that work with certain Bravia XR TVs. But if you want to get a feel of surround sound, the 360 Reality Audio feature is always within reach. It’s great while watching TV shows and movies. You could use these earphones with your TV, so you don’t disturb people once it’s past bed time for others.

The design and construction of the WI-C100 is robust, but more importantly it’s IPX4 compliant, so you can use it while exercising and it won’t be bothered by sweat or some light drizzle. Care has been taken so that the earphones fit well, but the controls are also intuitive. Like other earphones, there are volume and playback controls, but the buttons are more defined, and their shape makes them easier to reach for, without even looking at them. There are also technologies meant for making pairing with Android devices and Windows laptops easy. The Fast Pair feature for Android means a single tap lets you get connected, and Swift Pairs helps them latch on to Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices easily.

There is a lot of earphones you get for the price, with these earphones. So, if you’re in the market for a new pair of earphones and are looking for something a little over the Rs 1,500 price range, consider the Sony WI-C100.
