Sony sets high standards, no matter what the product. You know Sony won’t deliver anything less than top-notch with best-in-class reliability. One such product category is their TVs. Sony is now aiming its sights at the next phase of TV technology – Mini LEDs.

Mini-LED TVs have been around in the market for a while now. Other brands rushed the market with their Mini LED models to gain the first-mover’s advantage. However, Sony took its time, and now we understand why. Many early Mini LED TVs had issues, such as the blooming effect in darker scenes. Some also had heat management issues, which could be troublesome in the longer run. Sony wants to perfect this technology with the new X95K Bravia XR, the brand’s first-ever Mini LED TV. It claims to eliminate all issues and offer a more realistic picture quality than its rivals. But, can it be the new benchmark? Let’s find out.

Mini-LED TVs use smaller but more LED diodes. More LEDs results in brighter images. Since they can be controlled individually, these TVs deliver deeper black levels that as good as OLED panels. Mini LED TVs are also more reliable than OLEDs as they don’t have image burn-in issues.

Sony is perfecting Mini LEDs with its Bravia XR Master technology. It uses a special algorithm that more precisely controls backlighting and delivers pictures without halo around the highlights. This feature is powered by Cognitive Processor XR CPU, which is fast and known for its powerful performance on Sony’s OLED line-up. The XR Contrast Booster 15 feature adds more depth, details and realism to the picture.

The Sony Bravia X95K is an 85-inch 4K TV. This is one of the largest TVs from Sony supporting over 1 billion colours. Sony says the TV analyses and adjusts everything from colour saturation, brightness and hues for delivering a natural-looking picture viewing experience. The TV also supports the real-time XR 4K Upscaling feature. The Cognitive Processor XR accesses a large amount of data and automatically restores lost textures and details in scenes. It allows users to have a 4K viewing experience with irrespective of the source.

The TV comes with XR Motion Clarity that analyses motion across several frames to ensure the action-paced screen remains smooth, bright and clear. This year, Sony is also introducing an X-Wide Angle feature that claims to deliver a wider viewing angle than some of its high-end OLED TVs. A new X-Anti Reflection coating is also added on the screen which reduces glare and renders clearer pictures. This TV also includes an RGB light sensor that optimises colour and brightness according to the light source and room environment.

This Sony TV supports HDR 10, HLG and Dolby Vision. It now takes an object-based processing approach to take HDR precision to a new level. The TV is also designed with the PlayStation 5 in mind. With the Auto HDR Tone Mapping feature, the TV automatically detects the PlayStation 5 and applies the best HDR setting. This ensures you can see the details and colours in the brightest and darkest parts of the screen. It also turns on the Low Latency feature when the console is connected. This is great when you’re gaming and want the best responsiveness.

The TV comes with a total of four HDMI ports. Two of these ports support HDMI 2.1, allowing gamers to experience 4K 120 fps gaming. You also get a pair of USB ports and an optical in port for easy connection to a soundbar or a home theatre system. The TV support Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, but a LAN port is also present for wired network connectivity. There is also Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting wireless headphones or speakers.

The Sony Bravia X95K is a slim and premium-looking 4K TV. It has a borderless design with titanium-coloured sides. The TV has straight metal feet offering a solid grip on flat surfaces. They can be adjusted in three positions. A narrow setting is handy, if you have a small table, a low position for minimal space between the screen and table, and a high position to accommodate soundbars. The TV can also be mounted to a wall using a VESA mount.

The rear of the TV has a checkerboard design. It’s entirely plastic, with enclosures for wire management. Sony now has added clips to route cables to the input. It has also redesigned the remote, which is now smaller with lowered buttons. It comes with a special polyurethane coating that makes wiping it easy.

The X95K is also one of the loudest-sounding Sony TVs. It has a 60W sound output that comes from a pair of mid-range speakers, two tweeters and two subwoofers. The TV supports Sony’s Acoustic Multi-Audio technology that manages sound positioning in high frequencies for enhanced realism. There is also a Voice Zoom 2 feature that enhances dialogues’ volume without turning up the overall volume.

The TV runs on the latest Google TV OS, so you get all the major streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max and Hotstar. You also get access to the Google Play Store to download more apps and games. The TV comes with Google Assistant, so you can find content using voice commands. With Google Home and Apple HomeKit, you can control supported smart devices straight from your TV. You also get Alexa support.

The X95K is one of the most premium Sony TVs you can buy right now. It perfects the Mini LED technology and offers top-notch picture quality, which the competition may barely match.
