Samsung’s Galaxy S20 comes with all the bells and whistles one expects from a flagship. It houses Samsung’s most powerful smartphone chipset, it has a premium design, and great cameras, but it is expensive. The recently announced Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Fan Edition aims to make the S20 series more accessible. The S20 FE has features like the flagship Galaxy S20 but more affordable.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE looks a lot like the Galaxy S20. The rear panel is made of plastic (or as Samsung likes to call it, ‘glasstic’). The device is available in six colours – Cloud Navy, Cloud White, and Cloud Red. Samsung has also introduced Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavender and Cloud Mint colours, which are exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. The device is constructed on an aluminium frame to make it strong and light. The front glass comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection to protect it from scratches. The Galaxy S20 FE is also IP68 certified, which means it can withstand water and dust. The device also has in-display fingerprint reader, to unlock the device, purchase apps and make payments.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE comes with a 6.5-inch full-HD display, which is slightly bigger than the S20’s 6.2-inch screen. It uses a Super AMOLED panel, which means the S20 FE will render excellent images with deep blacks and high contrast. It has a 120Hz refresh rate that makes scrolling through apps, images, and web pages buttery-smooth. The Galaxy S20 FE uses Samsung’s Infinity-O design, that helps achieve its 85 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The punch-hole camera is now even smaller than the standard S20, so it blends neatly with the display and it also gives the phone a cleaner look. The S20 FE’s display supports premium features such as HDR10+, that balances the contrast between lighter and darker shades. The display’s Always-on feature lets you view dates, weather alerts, and incoming notifications immediately.

The Samsung Galaxy FE promises to be a powerhouse with its flagship-like hardware. It runs the same Exynos 990 processor that powers the Samsung Galaxy S20. This means the device can handle all apps and games with ease. It also runs a Mali G77 GPU, which means gamers can expect stutter-free performance while playing graphics-intensive games such as Call of Duty: Mobile. The device will be available in two configurations. The entry-spec variant sports 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage while the higher-spec variant comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB on storage. It uses UFS 3.1 storage, which helps load apps quickly and while improving read and write speeds. The S20 FE also houses a dedicated microSD card slot that lets you expand the storage up to 1TB.

Like most new Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy S20 FE also ships with Samsung’s One UI 2.1 software. Samsung claims interface is cleaner, to make it more visually appealing. The animations are more fluid, to take advantage of the phone’s 120Hz display. The One UI 2.1 also comes with a new Quick Share feature, that allows you to quickly share files, photos and music with nearby Samsung devices. The phone also supports Android 10 gestures. Samsung has streamlined the notifications window, to reduce interruptions while watching full-screen videos and playing games.

The Samsung Galaxy FE comes with a triple-camera configuration at the rear. The camera setup is very similar to the Galaxy S20 with some minor tweaks. The primary 12MP camera comes with an f/1.8 aperture, and it supports advanced features such as OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). The secondary 8MP telephoto camera has 3X optical zoom and Samsung’s 30X Space Zoom, that can be helpful while clicking distant wildlife. The Galaxy FE also comes with a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera for clicking landscapes and architecture. The front-facing 32MP wide front camera should let you click great selfies. The rear and front cameras can record 4K videos up to 60 fps.

The Samsung Galaxy FE is a dual-SIM LTE device that comes with future-ready Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. Bluetooth 5.0 is present too, for connecting audio solutions and peripherals. The device also has stereo speakers, which is handy when you are listening to music or streaming content online. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE features a 4,500 mAh battery, which is significantly bigger than the S20 and the S20 Plus. Samsung also bundles a 25W Super Fast Charger, that promises 50 per cent of charge in 30 minutes. The device also supports Samsung’s Fast Wireless Charging 2.0, and reverse wireless charging which can charge smartphones or truly wireless earbuds.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE aims to be the most affordable S20 series device. The prices of the Indian variant are yet to be announced, but we can expect it to be significantly lower than the Galaxy S20.
