Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro – A benchmark for Truly Wireless Earbuds

Samsung finally revealed the Galaxy S21 after months of rumours and leaks. The smartphone was the show-stopper of the event, but the new Galaxy Buds Pro also stole everyone’s attention. The Galaxy Buds Pro are not just an upgraded version of the older Galaxy Buds Live. They completely change how Truly Wireless Earbuds should sound. The buds sport technology seen on high-end speakers, and a fresh design, that promise to make them better than its rivals.

Samsung has dropped the kidney-bean design for a more compact form factor. Samsung says the earbuds are smaller so they can fit ears of different shapes and contours. The convex shape makes for a secure fit, and they come with 2mm vents to improve airflow and balance the pressure around the ears. You can wear the earbuds for long durations without the sensation of tightness. The new Galaxy Buds Pro comes with three pairs of ear tips. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro are available in three colours – Phantom Black, Phantom Silver and Phantom Violet, identical to the Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

The Galaxy Buds Pro come with an IPX7 certification, so the buds can easily withstand heavy rains and intense, sweaty workouts. The earbuds storage case is also marginally slimmer and smaller than its predecessor. It has a matte finish to keep fingerprints away, and a LED light on the front for the battery status.

The Galaxy Buds Pro’s in-built touchpad makes controlling music easy. A single tap plays or pauses music, while a quick double-tap skips tracks. You can hold the touch on the right earbuds to increase the volume and the left to decrease it. Samsung has worked to improve the call quality. The new buds sport three microphones and an accelerometer in each earpiece to filter out background noise during calls. Samsung says, one of the microphones has a high signal-to-noise ratio to improve the audio quality. The earbuds also use beamforming technology to cut down wind sound during audio calls.

Most Truly Wireless Earbuds use a one-way speaker resulting in an average audio experience. The new Galaxy Buds Pro solves this with an all-new two-way speaker system. Samsung has combined an 11 mm woofer with a 6.5 mm tweeter to balance low and high frequencies. Samsung says the technology creates a natural and outstanding music listening experience, while also setting a new standard for truly wireless earphones. The buds also support a 360 Audio feature that uses Dolby Head Tracking technology. This delivers a more immersive listening experience.

The Galaxy Buds Pro’s Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) promises to take the audio experience to the next level. Samsung says it reduces the background sound by up to 99 per cent, letting you hear to your favourite music and podcasts without any disturbances. The earbuds also let you adjust the degree of cancellation via the Galaxy Wearable app. This means you can crank up the ANC level when you are in a noisy environment. There’s also an all-new Intelligent Active Noise Control feature. It uses microphones and sensors to detect when you are in a conversation and according lets external sounds through. This means you don’t have to keep diving into the app to adjust the ANC, and you can interact with people around without removing the earbuds.

The Galaxy Buds wirelessly connect to other devices using Bluetooth 5.0. They support SBC, AAC audio codecs along with Samsung’s own SAC (Scalable Audio Codec) that provides higher-quality audio when paired with Samsung devices. The earbuds also support Samsung’s Auto Switch feature. It lets you take calls from your smartphone while watching movies or playing games on your tablet.

Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app lets you customise the audio to your taste. There is also an option to add extra bass. The app lets you enable or disable the earbud’s touch controls and even reconfigure them. It also gives detailed information about the earbud’s battery. The app has a SmartThings Find feature that lets you locate your earbuds. It plays a ringing sound on the earbuds that make tracking them down easy.

The Galaxy Buds Pro promises up to 5 hours of battery life, even with ANC turned on. The charging case provides additional 13 hours, which means you get a total of 18 hours of battery life. The earphones support fast charging, and Samsung claims a 5 minute of charge provides an hour playback. The Galaxy Earbuds also support Samsung’s PowerShare feature, which means you can even wirelessly charge them using the new Galaxy S21 smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro set a new benchmark of Truly Wireless Earbuds.
