Samsung Galaxy A72 – Full of Awesome!

Samsung has turned into a whole new smartphone company over the past year or so. They have been a dominant force, but with the competition heating up, attention has shifted to the newcomers. That seems to be changing quickly, and Samsung is returning but as the underdog. That is a good thing. It’s evident, as Samsung chooses to highlight their Galaxy A series, even calling them, ‘Awesome is for everyone’. The result of the patience and constructive attitude is paying off. Their new Galaxy A72 is a solid new phone that should meet all the expectations of the consumer looking for a premium phone priced well under the Rs. 40,000 mark.

There are two main models to choose from, one with 128GB of storage priced at Rs. 34,999* and the 256GB storage option at Rs. 37,999*. All models come with 8GB of RAM, and of course, the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC. The storage options look enticing but unlike most other smartphones with these kinds of capacities, you still get a microSD card slot that supports capacities up to 1TB, which is a lot more than you need, and in the ballpark of mainstream laptops and computers.

The 720G is the perfect processor for a variety of tasks. You could use the Samsung A72 for gaming, apps for work, chatting, video calling and more. The 8GB of RAM also helps in the efforts and you won’t be struggling to multitask between heavy apps. The A72 has a lot going for it, and it is a device for office goers, gamers, photography enthusiasts, or just casual smartphone users.
The phone’s design and aesthetics have gotten a facelift too. The A72 is a bolder, younger looking device. It shows from the colours, and how Samsung chooses to name them. Some of the coolest colours, are the Awesome White, Awesome Violet, Awesome Blue and Awesome Black. Most of them would look fine in any environment, but each of the colours maybe closer to your preference. The back of the phone is void of distractions. There is a bump for the cameras on the left top but that is entirely functional. The shape, the curves are all tastefully done and even the camera bump follows the pattern. Not only does the A72 look great, but it’s also dust and water-resistant. It’s rated for IP67 so it can withstand 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. A little water here and there, should not affect the A72.
The cameras are a big part of the new A72, as is the case with so many new devices. For one, the primary camera has a 64MP sensor, with a f/1.8 aperture lens. It’s the one you are likely to use most of the time. The 8MP telephoto lens can be used to click photos of distant objects or close-up objects. Ideally, you should use the 5MP macro lens for that purpose, and it can get very close to objects. It also helps add the bokeh effect to photos. There is also a 12MP ultra-wide camera for clicking wide landscapes or large group photos. The primary and telephoto camera have optical image stabilization, so you do not need to worry about the occasional hand shaking. This is useful when you are clicking photos from a moving vehicle or while shooting videos. OIS is needed when clicking photos in low light where the shutter speeds tend to be lower, and where shaking can result in blurry photos. You can even shoot 4K videos on the new A72. The front-facing camera sits in a punch-hole slot at the top. It is a 32MP sensor, so it is not too far behind the rear-facing camera. It too can manage the bokeh effect to add that artistic softness to the image as needed.
The screen takes most of the focus at the front of the screen. It’s a 6.7-inch display running at 90Hz, which means things feel and operate smoother than on traditional devices running 60Hz displays. It runs a resolution of FHD+ (1080 x 2400) which is impressive and ideal for gaming, working, watching content and more. It is also a sAMOLED panel, so you get bright and deep contrast colours and saturation. Samsung rates the display at 800nits, so it’s bright enough for well-lit environments indoors but also in the bright day outside. There is also something called SGS, an eye comfort shield feature that reduces strain on your eyes if you spend a lot of time on your smartphone. All these things together elevate the user experience on the A72.
The A72 keeps on giving. It ships with a massive 5,000mAh battery, which is better in use, than on paper. It should last you easily through a day, or two depending on how you use it. The 25W charging also helps boost the phone from no charge to full charge in no time. There are other enhancements onboard. Wi-Fi 802.11ac is built into the device, so you can stream high-quality movies from around the network effortlessly, or even transfer those large 4K videos from your phone to your laptop or PC. The connector used is a USB Type-C so plugging it in to the charger is a little more convenient. There is more convenience, in the form of the 3.5mm audio jack that lets you use any earphones or headphones on the phone. Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC are also part of the package, bringing the A72 up to the same levels as most flagship devices.

Security is taken care of by the fingerprint sensor built into the screen. You can use it with compatible services, for unlocking apps and web sites. The A72 also includes the new One UI which is refined, free of bloat and it makes Samsung standout compared to some of the shoddy interfaces seen on some other smartphones.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A72 ticks all the right boxes this time around and it makes for a compelling purchase for anyone looking or a great phone. The Galaxy A72 has all the features you will need for the years to come, and it is the right companion whether you are someone who wants to game it out online, or just get work done, or relax streaming your favourite shows and movies from the web.
