Samsung might have showcased their next-generation 8K QLED TVs, but 4K still has a long way to go before it becomes mainstream. Samsung TVs are known for their picture quality and innovative designs. Looking at the craze for 4K TVs over the past few years, Samsung has launched a trail of 4K TVs. The company had launched the KU series of 4K Smart TVs in 2016, MU in 2017 and the NU series this year. Each series of TVs have a mix of mid-range to high-end flat and curved 4K TVs, with their own set of pioneering features. We reviewed one of the premium 55-inch MU6470 4K Smart TV priced at Rs. 139,900* quite some time back.

This year, we got a chance to review one of the latest models, the Samsung NU7470 55-inch 4K TV model. Surprisingly, Samsung TVs have seen a drastic price drop over the past two years. The NU7470 is stamped with a price tag of Rs. 114,900* and is a Smart 4K TV that sports Dynamic Crystal Colour Ultra HD certified HDR standard, that promises better quality picture. Let’s see if the Samsung NU7470 adds value to its price tag or is the younger sibling, the Samsung N7100 a better TV worth considering.

Design and Build

The Samsung NU7470 is a sleek looking 4K TV with a very minimalistic design. The TV has a clutter-free curvy back and the screen with a narrow bezel. We found that the back of the TV is almost identical to the previous generation, the Samsung MU6470 TV. The NU7470 is slim in design and doesn't take a lot of space, even if wall mounted. You also have an option to use the stylish Y-shaped TV stand, which adds a premium look to the TV. The Samsung NU7470 has a strong and sturdy plastic build all over.

The Samsung NU7470 is bundled with a universal remote, which can control other smart devices at home. The remote is made up of hard plastic, featuring the same curvy design seen over the years. We still like it for its simple form-factor. The remote has a dedicated microphone and a voice button that allow easy access to content, a circular dial for navigation and two toggle buttons for controlling volume and channels. Other buttons include power, number input, home, etc.

Connecting other devices to the TV is not a problem at all. All the ports are suitably placed on the right and are easily accessible, even if the TV is wall mounted. The top of the TV is pretty slim, but widens at the base because of the two speaker grills mounted at the base. The unit we are reviewing is the 55-inch model, but the TV is also available in 43, 50 and 65 inch sizes.

Features

Samsung has always been very innovative and has a lot to offer. The Samsung NU7470 is one from the recently launched NU series TV. It’s a large 55-inch Smart LED TV running on a native resolution of 3840 x 2160. There is little that comes to sight when comparing the NU7100 with the NU7470. The interface, collection of apps, navigation style, settings are all identical. The only major difference we noticed in the NU7470 is the bundled universal remote. This remote can control all the other smart devices connected to the TV. In addition, the remote has a voice search feature, which lets you control the TV with your voice.

The NU7470 is compatible with the HDR10+ standard. It is an updated and improved version of HDR10. In addition, there is Samsung’s Dynamic Crystal Colour feature, which promises excellent picture quality with a wide range of colours. The interface is very clean with menus and settings organized neatly. There are few apps such as Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Browser, Google Play Movies and TV preinstalled. Samsung’s own app store is present too, from where you can install a number of apps of your choice.

For connecting devices to the TV, there are three HDMI and two USB ports. There is one LAN port, a set of composite, component ports and Bluetooth HID for connecting wireless mouse, keyboard and game controllers.

Performance

The Samsung NU7470 is a good looking Smart TV and has everything you would want in a 4K TV. You get to see an animated screen transition on switching on the TV, later giving direct access to the home screen. We had to first pair the remote to the TV, which is very easy to do. One good thing about the NU7470 is the auto-detection feature. The TV reads the name of media devices immediately after they are connected. Almost everything from the interface, operating system to apps installed are identical to its younger sibling, the Samsung NU7100.

During our performance test, we viewed several sample 4K photos and 4K videos. On the default Dynamic picture mode, the photos appeared overly bright. Even the videos appeared bright. On changing the picture mode from Dynamic to Standard, then making fine tweaks to the saturation, backlight, colours and contrast, we managed to get a close-to-perfect picture. There is also an RGB colour correction settings, which makes a drastic change to the picture. This can be useful while calibrating your TV. Details in the picture were really impressive, but the viewing angles of the TV were not so great. The screen loses colour accuracy, as it turns paler when viewed beyond roughly 45 degrees, from a distance of around 5 feet.

When we played a sample HDR clip of Life of Pi, the TV shows up a HDR enabled logo on the selected picture mode under quick settings. Playing the HDR content on the TV automatically changes the picture settings. The brightness, backlight, saturation and colours are set to maximum. This makes the picture pop out and appear bright. If needed, you can choose to make some changes to the settings. We also connected the NU7470 to the internet. Using the pre-installed Smart browser was fun.

Like the previous generation Samsung MU6470 4K TV, even the NU7470 comes with the Smart Hub feature. It gives you a set of recommended content and apps based on your interest. Connectivity options include HDMI ARC feature, which lets you connect audio devices such as soundbar, home theatre to the TV using an HDMI cable. The HDMI ARC feature lets audio and video both transmit through the HDMI cable. You can even use the Samsung SmartView app, which lets you stream content from your phones and tablets. The app is available for both iOS and Android users. The app also acts as a remote control, besides just showing up content.

The Samsung SmartThings was something new we found on the Samsung NU7470 4K TV. It is now commonly found on recently launched Samsung TVs. With the help of this feature, you can easily create a connection between smart devices such as refrigerators, phones at your home and the TV. It is great, since you can interact with all these devices on a single screen. In terms of audio quality, the TV sports stereo 20W speakers that are capable of filling up a decent sized room. It is loud and clear.

Verdict

The Samsung NU7470 4K Smart TV is a pretty decent TV priced at Rs. 114,900*. It has good picture and sound quality. The TV has a smooth and responsive interface, with some noticeable lag when toggling between menus and settings very fast. Viewing angles aren’t impressive. So, you may have to arrange your seating to be in front of the TV if you are very specific about picture quality. Most of the things from design, interface, operating system to connectivity ports are almost identical to its nearly priced younger sibling - the Samsung NU7100. When it comes to 4K Smart TVs, you might want a smart remote with voice search. The Samsung NU7470 has it, a universal remote and more.
