Oppo Reno4 Pro – Well ahead of the curve

Occasionally, there comes a stunning smartphone that breaks the norm, or has a different take on it. Oppo’s new Reno4 Pro is one of those devices and there is a lot it’s capable of. A lot of smartphones have been built around specific features, but few are as balanced as the new Reno4 Pro.

The Reno4 Pro’s key highlight is its screen. Spanning 6.5-inch diagonally, it’s massive, it’s curved and it’s borderless. It’s great if you like watching movies and TV shows on your smartphone. It’s even better if you like gaming. There is enough space to let you set up complex multi-finger controls around it. The screen size means you can laze on a couch or in bed, watching movies through a weekend afternoon or late through the night. There is more to the screen than just its size though. Its 1080 x 2400 resolution adds more detail, and it has the pixel density to display lots of content, like text in web pages, chats and more.

The screen runs a 90Hz refresh rate, which is noticeably better than 60Hz and you will never want to go back to 60Hz after using this. It’s an AMOLED screen so you can forget all about blurry images and low contrast seen on LCD screens. That’s not all. It’s supported by a Corning Gorillas Glass 5, which means it’s stubborn against things that could dent or crack it. Even the colours are accurate, since it’s a 100% DCI-P3 class device. The 1100 nits brightness rendition is rarely seen on smartphones and that means, using it outdoors is no problem. We mentioned watching movies and TV shows a while back. The display on this phone is certified for Netflix and Amazon Prime. We are always worried about screen brightness and the harm from spending too much time looking at Wone. The Oppo Reno4 Pro is certified by TÜV Rheinland for Full Care Display, so it’s not as bad as most screens might be.

At its heart is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor. It’s not the absolute flagship-class processor, but it’s pretty darn close. It’s an 8-core processor that gets its graphics-performance by the accompanying Adreno 618 GPU. The phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage too. They all work together to offer you not the world’s fastest phone, but all the performance you really need and use. The result is a buttery-smooth performance in every app and game you run on it. If storage is a concern, you will be glad to know it has a microSD slot so you can expand it further.
One of the key highlights of the new Reno4 Pro is its camera setup. There is an array of them at the rear. The front camera is built into the screen and is rated for 32MP, so you get good detail, and a large image photo that you could print if you’d like. The rear cameras include the 48M main camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera for those landscapes and group photos that need maximum coverage. There is also a 2MP macro camera for extreme close-ups while shooting insects or flowers. The last on the list is a 2MP monochrome camera. Those make up the specs, but there is a lot of interesting tech in the background. Oppo calls one of these features, AI Color Portrait and what it does is, it removes colours from the backgrounds in videos. This makes the footage really stand out and it’s great for specific kind of footage. You can also filter out specific colours too. Other features include motion stabilization, which means movements are normalized and you get professional-looking footage. The camera can shoot videos at 960fps that makes creating slow motions shots even simple. Most professional cameras can’t hope to shoot at these frame rates.

Not everything about the Oppo Reno4 Pro is about the camera though. The fast charging on the phone is something else. Oppo calls it the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. As the name suggests, it bundles a powerful charging adapter. That along with the 4,000 mAh battery make it a solid package. The phone can last a long time but recharging it for just five minutes lets you watch YouTube (under Oppo’s test conditions) for four hours. It can be charged to a 100 per cent in no more than 36 minutes, which is absolutely staggering. You could literally charge the device in the time it takes to shower, and the phone can go through a day without a recharge.

Other impressive stats include its swift unlocking fingerprint scanner. Oppo claims the Reno4 Pro can unlock in no more than 0.34 seconds. Of course, if you prefer Face unlocking, it’s present too.

The Reno4 Pro comes shipped with ColorOS 7.2, based on Android 10. It has seen improvements too, with some improvements being the Wallpaper Project that houses great looking wallpapers from featured artists. There are also animated wallpapers called Gravity wallpapers. There is a Respawn time feature, which lets you know when you’re about to respawn in a game, so you can jump back into the action. Oppo Relax, a bundled app helps you relax and calm your nerves while it plays ambient nature sounds in the background while you work. This is particularly handy when you’re trying work in a noisy environment.

The regular set of features are all present on the phone. In addition to those, you also get the latest Bluetooth 5.1 for better range and power efficiency, even Wi-Fi 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 6) with MU-MIMO support that enables over-the-top wireless data transfer speeds. This is great for streaming high-quality videos across the internet or even the local network.
The Oppo Reno4 Pro has an ultra slim design, with its 7.7mm thickness. It’s quite slim and weighs just 161g. The design is minimalistic, and the punch-hole camera hardly takes any space on the screen. You won’t even know it’s there. The Oppo Reno4 Pro is also available in two exciting colours, Starry Night and Silky White.

Not a lot more needs to be said about the new Oppo Reno4 Pro. It’s a thoroughly impressive device that has a ton of features, more than you might ever need. It’s built well, and it’s priced at a rather attractive launch price of Rs. 34,990*. It’s perfect if you’re looking for your next major phone upgrade, or if you want a device to game on, or just watch movies and chat with your friends.
