Oppo’s very new phone launches are the mid-range A74, and the A54. They are separated by a few thousand rupees, but what do you lose out on or gain in the choice? In a sea of mid-range devices, Oppo suggests that that the A54 has all the features you would want. Let’s find out what the claims are and how relevant the Oppo A54 is as your next smartphone upgrade.
The design of a new phone is always interesting. Some manufacturers choose gaudy, loud colours and designs, while Oppo has opted for an elegant look. The phone comes in three colours, Starry Blue, Crystal Black and Moonlight Gold. The black and gold variants seem like similar finishes, but the Starry Blue has a different kind of reflection and theme that is better suited for younger audience. Despite the size, the A54 is quite light and slim, weighing about 19g and 8.4mm in thickness. The 3D-crafted body isn’t just sleek, it’s rounded so it’s comfortable in your hands.
The screen is massive by modern smartphone standards, spanning 6.51 inches diagonally and running a resolution of 720 x 1600 (HDR+). It still has a good pixel density of 269 PPI, and with its Eye Comfort feature, it’s comfortable for watching long hours of movies and TV shows without any eye-strain. The phone smartly adjusts the screen brightness to the lighting. It’s also bright enough that you can use it outdoors in broad daylight without any issues. It’s also great for gaming and the larger real estate helps place controls comfortably around the display.
The Oppo A54 comes in several performance variants. There are two 4GB options, one with 64GB and the other with 128GB of internal storage. You can also opt for the higher-spec version that comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The additional RAM should help those who like running several apps simultaneously, but the 4GB should be sufficient for anyone who runs every day apps. The processor onboard is a MediaTek Helio P35 chipset, which is an octa-core unit clocked to speeds up to 2.3GHz. It has enough firepower for all popular apps to run smoothly, and you can also game on it when you feel like it. The storage too can be extended using a microSD card. Memory cards up to 256GB are supported, so that’s ample space if you like storing movies, TV shows, and music onboard your device.
The battery life of the Oppo A54 is truly extraordinary. Armed with a 5,000mAh battery and 18W Fast Charge feature, not only can you go a long time without having to recharge your device, but it also charges quickly when you need to. You can even let it charge through the night and the phone pauses charging at 80 per cent, only to resume so it’s fully charged when you wake up. Oppo claims the A54 fully charged gives up to 19.9 hours of battery life if you were streaming content online non-stop, and 42 hours if you were to listen to music continuously. The Oppo A54 even comes with a Type-C USB port so it’s easy to plug it in than traditional microUSB plugs.
The Oppo A54 has a punch hole gap on the left top corner of the screen where the 16MP front-facing camera sits. The rear array has three cameras, the 13MP primary camera that adds the detail to capture great photos with its auto-focus support. The other two cameras are 2MP macro and 2MP bokeh cameras. They are responsible for adding the fun in photography. The macro camera enables the Oppo A54 to get close to objects, while the bokeh camera behaves like a depth sensor bringing the smooth depth-of-field blur that we like to see in our photos. All the hardware comes together with Oppo’s AI Beautification feature that tweaks colours, ambient light and the skin tones so the results are nothing short of spectacular. Both, the front and rear cameras can shoot videos at full HD, at 30fps. The rear camera can also shoot 720p videos at 90fps, letting you slow down footage.

The Oppo A54 is also certified as IPX4, so it’s splash waterproof. That means you could get wet in the rain and not worry about damaging your smartphone. Oppo claims the A54 has been tested to drops, radiation, temperature variations and more. Their tests include 20,000 USB port replugs, 28,000 10cm drop tests, and even more volume and power button tests. This is a device that can withstand some abuse for sure. You’re very unlikely to run into trouble through the years that you might use the device. It brings a certain peace of mind.
Bluetooth 5.0 is present with low energy support so you can pair wireless peripherals without consuming much power. It’s useful when connecting to earphones and Bluetooth speakers. The phone also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11ac which is a mainstream wireless standard and is very capable for streaming full HD movies and more over the network and the web. Bluetooth earphones are convenient but if you want to use your premium wired earphones on the A54, you will also find a 3.5mm audio jack which is just that bit easier to use than those pesky Type-C-to-3.5mm adapters. A fingerprint scanner is also present, located on the side so your thumb reaches it the moment you hold up the phone. It’s quick and convenient.
