The Oppo A16 is one in a line of smartphones that fits into a price bracket that most of us look for. The new Oppo A16 sells at about Rs. 13,990*. It is a phone that brings a lot to a table but does not ask for much. In some ways, it is quite like the many other devices in its range, but this new introduction pushes things up a few notches. It is the kind of device you purchase and use for a few years, then replace with no regrets.
The Oppo A16 is a modern looking device with a metal frame that offers rigidity and a good feeling of premium. The body is sturdy, but it is also curved on the edges making it comfortable to hold. This is an important thing at a time where most phones are so large, and you need to stretch your palm further to reach the corners. The A16 weighs about 190g, and it is 8.4mm thick. You get to choose from two interesting colour options – Pearl Blue and Crystal Black. Both colours are sober and tasteful, suitable for all occasions, for all kinds of age groups and styles. There are finer elements that make each option unique. The Pearl Blue has a frosted finish that is matte in nature. The Crystal Black variant has a texture that is visible under the light. These touches are interesting, for a smartphone priced this low.

On the front is a massive 6.52-inch display with a screen ratio of 88.7 per cent. It runs a resolution of 720 x 1600 (HD+). This is a standard for most phones at this price range, and you can use it for everything for gaming to watching TV shows, movies and using your favourite apps. The display rated for a typical brightness of 480 nits and a contrast ratio of 1500:1. This should suffice for use indoors, but also in daylight.
The camera setup of the Oppo A16 is made of three units. The 13MP one is the primary camera with a f/2.2 aperture, and it lets you click photos with decent detail and colours. There is a 2MP mono camera with similar specs, and another 2MP macro camera that should be useful if you want to get close to tiny objects, and even get those trendy shallow depth-of-field shots. All these cameras work in a streamlined manner, offering a respectable amount of flexibility as and when you need it. All the images are captured using the help with AI, that makes a significant improvement to the quality and the look of your photos.

The front-facing camera is enclosed in a teardrop-shaped housing on the screen. It uses an 8MP sensor. You can use the camera for selfies of yourself or as a group, but you may highly likely use it for video calling, now that remote working and remote classes are a thing.
There are a range of image enhancements feature built into the Oppo A16. AI Beautification is one where the details are left intact, and you can adjust the photo’s look to your liking. Dazzling Mode lets you enhance colours, like the photos came right out of a professional shoot. There are also a variety of bokeh filters that tweak the photos and the amount of blur to get the result you want.

A lot of the features we have spoken about are dependent on the processor for performance. The Oppo A16 runs a MediaTek Helio G35 processor. On paper, it is an 8-core processor clocked to speeds of up to 2.3 GHz. There is also an IMG GE8320 graphics unit onboard to help with games, and other graphics performance demanding applications. The phone also comes with 4GB of RAM, which helps in multitasking, regardless of the kind apps you use.
The battery life is a key factor while buying any new smartphone. The Oppo A16 comes with a 5,000 mAh battery, that should get you through a day and more without any issues. Oppo even says you can stream YouTube for about 21 hours straight on a single charge. Their Super Power Saving Mode will even give you nearly two hours of additional call time even with just 5 per cent charge left. Oppo has also taken care of safety with its Optimized Night Charge AI feature that controls the rate at which your phone charges at night. This helps keep the phone cool, and safe.

The Oppo A16 comes borrows great features from the past, and the future. A modern Type-C USB port is present for data transfer and charging, but also a 3.5mm audio jack so you can plug in a pair of your favourite wired earphones or headphone to the device, without having to mess around with Bluetooth headphones. The phone runs Android 11 with Oppo’s ColorOS 11.1 on top.
