The latest range of OnePlus TVs are interesting for a few reasons, the biggest of which, is their pricing. For prices as low as a smartphone, you can now own a truly smart TV. There are 32-inch and 43-inch models. The sizes are available in two ranges, one the OnePlus Y1S and the Y1S Edge. When a brand like OnePlus that’s best known for aggressively priced devices makes a TV, we take notice. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect in these models and which one you should choose.
The two models, the OnePlus Y1S and Y1S Edge Smart come in two sizes, 32-inch and 43-inch models. The 32-inch models in both ranges run a lower HD resolution of 1366 x 768, compared to the 43-inch models which are full HD (1920 x 1080) panels. Most of the other features are identical as far as the displays go. There is also a small price difference between the Y1S and Y1S Edge. OnePlus has employed a range of smart features to get you the best picture quality. The first is called Gamma Engine, which dynamically adjusts the brightness, colours, and contrast of the panels to make images and videos stand out. The result is a TV that looks better than it should, at this price range. OnePlus says this is possible using the power of AI. HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG are supported, another feature one might have imagined only on TVs priced thrice as much. The HDR standards lets the panels represent the entire gamut of colours, and this a feature that’s most surprising to see in products like these. This is great if you enjoy streaming content from premium media streaming services online, many of which support HDR. The OnePlus Y1S Edge TVs come with the TUV Rheinland Certification for reduced blue light, that should make the TV watching experience even more comfortable.
The corresponding audio setups on these TVs is also quite good. The standard Y1S models, in both sizes, get 20W speakers, but if you opt for the more premium Edge models, a 24W speaker setup is present. What’s more, all TVs are compatible and tuned for Dolby Audio output, so you get the best of both worlds, audio, and video. The TVs aren’t bulky either. They sport minimal, slim bezels, so the TV feels a lot larger and more importantly, the experience is immersive. These are TVs, that could look at home, whether it’s a living room, a bedroom, in an office, a lobby.
The thing that makes the new OnePlus TVs so interesting is that they are smart TVs, and you are rarely a lot of features at TVs in these prices. The Y1S and Y1S Edge support Chromecast, so you don’t have to buy an additional accessory. It opens a world of smart TV features straight out of the box. There is the Google Play Store where you can install a ton of apps, meant for TVs. It also comes with a built-in voice assistant, so you can use voice commands to get information, even control smart devices around the home. There are media streaming features such as DLNA, which let you stream content remotely from source devices to the TV, with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop functioning as a remote. OnePlus has also developed an app called the OnePlus Connect 2.0, which lets you share content to your TV with ease. It behaves like a remote control for the TV. You can also perform screen mirroring from your mobile devices to the TV. All of this is now possible even on a low-priced 32-inch OnePlus Y1S.
There is support for a ton of media streaming apps of channels we are used to seeing only on DTH services. Some require subscriptions, but if you opt for it, you can watch over 230 live TV channels on the OnePlus TVs, even without a DTH connection. There are other smart features too, such as one for gamers, called ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). Other features include parental controls which lets you enable the Kids mode remotely, even the Eye Comfort Mode. There are also seamless integration features if you are part of the ecosystem. If you own OnePlus products like the OnePlus Buds, the OnePlus Watch, these products can auto-adjust brightness, even know when you’re going to bed, then automatically turn off the TV. Even pairing and switching between audio devices becomes simpler.
Connectivity is a big deal, and most manufacturer skimp on the ports and features. The OnePlus Y1S and Y1S Edge come with two USB ports, so you can connect peripherals, even external hard drives, and pen drives, to play content from. There are two HDMI ports, one of which is an ARC-complaint one so you can connect audio solutions like soundbars with ease. If you are a purist, consider connecting the TV using the optical port to a home-theatre system. As far as wireless connectivity goes, there is Wi-Fi 802.11n which is quite recent, letting you stream content from around your home, and the web. There is also an Ethernet port if a router is nearby, to run a cable from. Bluetooth 5.0 is also built-in, so you connect Bluetooth earphones and speakers. They should sound great, but more importantly, rid the mess of cables.
