OnePlus 7T – Bringing the goodness of the 7 Pro

OnePlus is a great brand with a history of interesting products. They launched several models over the past two years, with every phone receiving the latest Android updates. Most of these smartphones have been iterations in some ways of former devices, and the most different device of recent times, has to be the OnePlus 7 Pro. It’s a great phone, and it challenges devices priced much higher up the order. We’re not here to talk about it though. We’re most excited about the OnePlus 7T which was announced a while back, and what a device it is!

Make no mistake, the OnePlus 7 Pro is an excellent product and it’s an incredibly high value-for-money offering that takes on devices priced twice as much. The OnePlus 7T inherits many of these features and puts them into an affordable package. The way to look at the OnePlus 7T is that it’s a premium smartphone priced marginally higher than the OnePlus 7.

The formula for the OnePlus 7T is simple. It runs a 90Hz HDR10+ AMOLED display which has made every phone enthusiast salivate in amazement. The OnePlus 7T is a phone that costs just Rs. 37,999* for the base model. The 90Hz refresh rate might sound like just another number but it delivers a drastically smoother user experience, whether you’re gaming, scrolling through the app drawer or web pages. The screen is a massive 6.55-inch one, running a resolution of 1080 x 2400. The in-screen fingerprint scanner is also part of this device, so you don’t need to reach over to the back of your phone to unlock it. A face unlocking feature also included, if you prefer using it. There is more good news; the teardrop camera notch has been shrunken to a point it’s hardly even visible. Watching content on this near-perfect screen is amazing and it’s only made better by the stereo speakers onboard the device. These speakers are graded for Dolby Atmos so you can expect some magical performance from them.

The formula for all OnePlus devices has been to bolt on top-notch features, with the best mobile computing hardware on the planet. The OnePlus 7T follows this paradigm. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ with 8GB of RAM, which is the fastest processor in the market. This is an 8-core 7nm processor clocked to run at 2.96GHz. You can choose between 128GB and 256GB storage variants. The storage performance too is impressive, because it uses something called UFS 3.0 that enables lightning-fast app loading and transferring of data to a PC or laptop using the cable. This is handy when you’re transferring high-resolution videos and photos shot on the OnePlus 7T.

The other major component of the new OnePlus 7T are the cameras, primarily the rear cameras. There are three of them at the rear – the standard 48MP camera, a 12MP 2x telephoto and an ultra-wide 16MP camera. All of these enable you to capture some amazing footage and stills, perfect if you like mobile photography. The wide-angle camera has a 117-degree field-of-view which lets you capture a lot of area in a photo – no need for those pesky panorama features. The telephoto lens lets you get closer to objects, even shoot interesting macro shots. It even shoots 4K videos at 60fps and you can choose to record 240fps slow-motion at full HD resolution or a whopping 960fps at 1280×720. This last bit will be enabled in an upcoming software update. There is a 16MP front-facing camera too.

To accommodate the camera setup, OnePlus has had to add a large block at the rear. It’s tastefully done, and the construction of the entire phone has seen some changes too. There is a matte frosted glass finish now. We’re seeing this trend in several phones now. There are two colours to choose from – Glacier Blue and Frosted Silver.

The list of improvements doesn’t end there. There is Warp charging as there has been in every recent OnePlus device, but it’s upgraded to something called Warp Charge 30T. It speeds up charging even further, going from 0 to 70 per cent in just 30 minutes. The 3,800 mAh battery onboard gets charged in no time at all so you’re rarely ever found with a discharged OnePlus.

The thing that makes OnePlus devices so great is large their good sense of software. You never find anything you won’t ever use, so the operating system is lightweight and quick. In the OnePlus 7T, you get the latest Android 10 operating system which only a very few select phones have today. OnePlus makes tweaks to every Android version, so you get some neat little hacks and toggles that make Android an excellent daily driver. You get great battery life too, no annoying software and complex menus, just a ton of useful customizations. If this were any other Android device, you would consider using a third-party custom ROM, but not this phone.

The formula has been that simple and the OnePlus 7T gets it right again. All the other things you expected in a good phone in 2019 are all present – WiFi 802.11ac with dual-band, dual-SIM cards, NFC, GPS.. you name it! If you’ve been holding back on buying a new powerful smartphone, that wait should end here. The OnePlus 7T goes on sale soon and you can pre-order your own at your nearest Reliance Digital store now.
