Not CPUs, GPUs – Laptop screens are the real reason to upgrade

You heard that right; processors and graphics cards are not the reason to upgrade your laptop in 2019. They have improved like they do each year but laptop screens have developed leaps and bounds. A walk through the nearest Reliance Digital store may give you an idea of what we’re on about. A closer look and you might realize, that the laptop screen is where you spend a significant portion of your day looking at. It can make you more productive, and more comfortable than if you were using a laptop from 2007 or earlier.

No matter what kind of work you do on your laptop, there are major advantages to using these newer models. These aren’t limited to high-end, expensive laptops either. Even screens on laptops priced as low as Rs. 35,000 now pack a world of improvements and you should know how they can change the way you work and play.

For everyday use
Most of us use laptops to browse, chat, maybe watch a YouTube video or two. The new laptops have higher resolutions but at incredibly lower prices. Older laptops screens ran at 1366 x 768 resolution on 14 and 15-inch screens. Text looked blurry and dull on those, but a laptop with a full HD screen makes a visible difference to any software that displays text and images. Larger resolution photos now fit better so you don’t have to scroll around.

More text now fits into a screen and this means you can be more productive. This is good news for anyone who uses a web browser, works on school and college projects, reads news and books on the laptop. Even YouTube videos play on full HD mode and once you’ve experienced it, you will not want to go back to lower resolution laptops again. The great thing for folk like us is that this is possible on reasonably priced laptops starting from as low as Rs. 35,000. Till of late, full HD screens were only seen on laptops priced over Rs. 60,000 but this is no longer the case.

For Gamers
Gamers are perpetually on the cutting edge of PC performance. The latest range of gaming laptops use larger screens, but the laptop chassis aren’t as thick because of the optimizations made to graphics solutions and their cooling solutions. They look as large as any other mainstream laptop.
The screens on these gaming laptops are now larger and it’s common to see them running 1920 x 1080 resolutions (full HD) at the very least. Some premium models run the higher 2560 x 1440 resolution (QHD) and some models even run 4K displays, but you need to shell out more. What this means is, superior graphics quality, sharper visuals, and no need to connect to external monitors or TVs. You can also sit closer and still experience quality gaming. Of course, don’t ignore the graphics solution the laptop comes with. With higher resolutions, comes the need for more performance.
Screen resolution is not the only improvement awaiting gamers. Newer gaming laptop screens also run higher refresh rates, unlike all the laptops before. The higher refresh rate gets rid of a common tearing issue caused by lower refresh displays. One of the web sites that demonstrates this issue well is TestUFO.com. Try this on your current laptop to see exactly the kind of issues you might face, whether you’re browsing or gaming.

Some laptops also come with FreeSync and GSync support which lets the laptop adjust the refresh rate to the frame rate your laptop’s graphics card puts out. In simpler words, the visuals look silky smooth, stable and they don’t irritate your eyes.

For Productivity and Designers
Many of us use laptops at work or use our personal laptops in office. If you have a flexible IT team to work with, urge them to set you up with a large screen laptop running a high resolution. Full HD resolution screens should be a starting point. If you are looking to buy a new laptop, besides the solid processor, RAM and graphics solution, look for a laptop with a full HD screen. The higher resolution allows you to pack more windows in a single screen.
This means you can be composing a mail, while working on a spreadsheet, and researching a bunch of stuff on your web browser. No need to alt-tab between windows, and that can save you a lot of time. Trust us, start managing windows better and you’ll save yourself a lot of energy and time every day. The large resolution screen helps in being more productive, so don’t skip it.

The other benefits are being able to see more of the workspace, more fields and cells in the spreadsheet in a single screen, so you do not need to scroll as much. You get more workspace to work freely with your heavy graphics editing software, so no matter how many toolbars on Photoshop, or 3d Studio Max you have running, you won’t limit the actual working area. Even those of us writing get ample room to add comments, make changes and multitask better.

For Media consumption
Possibly the biggest beneficiary is the individual who loves watching movies, and there is a bit of that in every one of us. We love streaming YouTube videos and in the age of Jio TV, Amazon Prime and Netflix, high-quality content is everywhere. You are going to be left with utter disbelief when you upgrade from a non-full HD screen laptop to a full HD one.
The fine detail and contrast seen on some of these laptops is staggering. HDR is no longer limited to expensive TVs; laptops too come built with HDR-enabled screens. Read our feature that explains just what to expect on an HDR screen and the differences between the standards. With the right content, full HD, 4K or even HDR, will make watching movies and TV shows so much more fun. Detail stands out and colours pop, in every frame.

Laptops just look more elegant now
Something all of us can now appreciate are good aesthetics. Screen sizes haven’t gone to a new level, but you can get a larger screen in a smaller laptop. This is because the bezels surrounding the screen have shrunk. With that kind of thin bezel, the shell of the laptop can be smaller, which means, the resulting product is more rigid, smaller and lighter. This is a trend found across all laptops. You can now pick up a laptop effortlessly and pop it into your bag pack.

The screen is just one part of the entire laptop. Like we’ve said it, it’s one of the well evolved components of late but there is always more to a laptop. Solid-state drives help propel laptops to the next level; they make laptops faster, lighter and last longer. If you are upgrading, this is another feature you can’t miss out on and we have advice on choosing graphics cards and processors too.
