Nokia 5.4 – Perfect for connecting people

Nokia’s rejuvenated image has many surprised. Unlike other brands with several phones in different price segments, Nokia has a few, solid offerings with some variations. The Nokia 3.4 is an interesting product at around Rs. 12,000, but if you are willing to up the budget to around Rs. 13,000 to Rs. 15,000, there is a more interesting device, the Nokia 5.4. It might just be the phone for you. This is a price point with plenty of options but Nokia might have all the features needed, in a tough, robust shell. Let’s see what the Nokia 5.4 is made of.

The Nokia 5.4 is an everyday driver, kind of device that you use for everything from casual chatting, gaming to office work, or just to stream YouTube and Twitch videos from the web. It has a large 6.39-inch display that has a pretty good resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels (HD+). That’s the kind of resolution where you don’t need to squint or stress your eyes to read fine fonts on the display. It’s also detailed enough for watching movies and TV shows online.
The cameras are the true focus of the new Nokia 5.4. The rear camera dominates the rest with its 48MP sensor. The front-facing camera uses as 16MP sensor in comparison and it’s hidden within the screen, showing itself only through the punchhole. The punchhole display ensures the screen is void of any other distractions and the front-facing camera is kept to one corner of the display, close to the notifications bar. The other cameras at the rear include a 2MP depth sensor camera, a 5MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera. All the cameras work hand-in-hand to deliver some outstanding results, especially on a phone at this price point. The circular camera block at the rear looks neat and is accompanied by a LED flash on one side and a fingerprint scanner at the bottom. This seems to be the trademark for most Nokia phones lately.
Those are impressive numbers on paper, but there is more to the cameras – shooting 60fps footage for example, makes a world of difference. There is also colour-grading capacity right on the device, so you don’t need to transfer videos to a PC and use complex software to get the job done. It uses AI to get the best results and the hardware on the Nokia 5.4 is designed just for it.
The Nokia 5.4 comes in two interesting colours, Polar Night and Dusk. Despite the large screen, it’s still a compact phone, measuring just 8.7mm in thickness. That gives it the benefit of making it easy to carry around in your pocket.
The Nokia 5.4 has a big edge up on the Nokia 3.4 on performance. You pay a little more and you get a lot more performance. In comparison, the Nokia 5.4 runs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 CPU. It’s an 8-core processor, based on a 11nm fabrication process and t’s accompanied by an Adreno 610 GPU. That kind of performance can plough through all the apps we typically use and some games as well. Photo and video editing is a breeze too.

The Nokia 5.4 comes in two variants, of 4GB and 6GB of RAM. The higher memory variant sold give you slightly better flexibility when it comes tom multitasking. If you are someone who keeps jumping app to app, the higher variant is the one you want. The price differences are minimal.
Storage comes in the form of 64GB of internal storage. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you are an everyday user, you will have enough space to install all your favourite apps. Most of us are streaming music and movies these days, so you won’t need to worry about running out of space. But if you are the kind of person who stores a lot of content on the phone, there is provision for a microSD card slot which lets you expand the storage up to 512GB.

Improvements to the phone are also on the software front. The phone runs the latest stable Android 11 release and in typical Nokia fashion, you get 3 years of security updates every month and two years of software upgrades. The software isn’t bloated either, so it’s a pure form of Android with only the essential customizations and tweaks made. You won’t have to sit around wondering if your device will ever get that update you’ve been waiting for.
The battery onboard is a 4,000 mAh one, and it’s perfect for getting you through around 2 days of daily use. There are other things to feel happy about. For one, there is a 3.5mm audio jack so you can use any pair of earphones or headphones with it, without the need of adapter. NFC, a feature we assume only even on expensive phones is available too. You could use it for payments, but more importantly to quickly connect to other devices with just a touch. All the other standard features such as Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.2 are present. You also get FM on this smartphone, which is a delight. The charging port is a Type-C connector which is just that bit convenient.

The Nokia 5.4 is a robust device, because it’s built well but also because it has all the features and performance you need, not all the excess that sounds nice on paper. It makes good sense as a long-term device, with all the updates it will get.
