Every smartphone is a piece of art. We’ve seen phones with gradient backs, in-display fingerprint sensors, pop-up cameras and punch-hole displays. We now see phones with folding screens. Smartphone manufacturers have spent millions into researching and developing foldable phones. The idea of folding phones has been around for a while now and Samsung turned it into reality by launching the Galaxy Fold in 2018. To make the future of folding phones bigger and better, another popular smartphone maker, Motorola joined the race. The company brings its iconic Razr back, but this time with a foldable screen. The idea of the new Razr comes from the old Razr V3 that was launched 16 years ago. The Motorola Razr has a retro look, a clamshell design and a large folding screen. Let’s see if the Razr leaves its mark in the Indian market.

Flashback to 2004, when there weren’t too many handsets. The iconic Motorola Razr V3 made its debut. It was a foldable phone with an interesting blue backlit keypad. You can imagine how far ahead of its time the phone was then. The Razr V3 phone had a 2.2-inch TFT display running at a resolution of 176 x 200, a single VGA camera, 680 mAh battery and 5.5MB of internal storage. It was extraordinary for its time.

Nearly 16 years later, Motorola reimagined the Razr V3 making it smarter, stronger and they priced it at Rs. 124,999*. The price is significantly higher than the old Razr V3 that was priced at just Rs. 4,999*. The new Razr looks almost identical to the V3, matching the original dimensions.

Put them side-by-side, and you’ll notice these two phones span roughly the same height and width. Like the original V3, the Razr flip opens vertically, but this time, it reveals the immersive 6.2-inch pOLED and a full-touch screen. The inner display has a notch with an earpiece and a front camera. The interesting part of the Razr is the external display. Motorola calls it a Quick View display, designed to work together with the main display. Think of it like a small smartwatch display, that projects the time and notifications. The interesting thing is that you can flip open the phone, and the contents of the tiny screen will be moved to the larger screen.

The new Motorola Razr can easily slide in your pocket, but compared to the older V3 that weighed 95g, it’s heavier, weighing 205g. It is also heavier than many other smartphones in 2020. Motorola has certainly drawn attention to the retro charmed Razr phone with its Noir Black colour.

The new Razr, priced more than a lakh, is equipped with two cameras – a 16-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone is photography-ready with features such as built-in AI and Night Vision. These should help click phenomenal photos and let the details stand out even during the night shots. There are many other camera modes such as the Portrait mode for pose-striking shots, the Spot Color mode in which you can choose to keep one colour and turn everything else to black and white.

The Motorola Razr is equipped with 6GB of RAM and a mid-ranged processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710. Motorola must have used the mid-range processor to maximize the battery life. Although, these two components should together guarantee decent performance and should easily handle everything right from browsing the web to multi-tasking. The Motorola Razr comes with 128GB of storage, which is commonly found on most phones these days and is sufficient space to store a ton of photos, videos, movies and music.

The Motorola Razr runs Android 9 Pie instead of the latest Android 10. We hope the Moto Razr gets the latest software update soon. Motorola ensures an undisrupted performance with the Razr’s 2,510 mAh non-removable battery. Most day-to-day tasks should run perfectly fine and you don’t have to the charge the phone very often. There is no wireless charging, but the phone supports fast charging. Motorola calls it the 15W Turbo Charge feature.

The Motorola Razr collects all the memories attached to the old Razr V3. It takes us back to the novelty of the fold in a new form. Also, the future of smartphones seems bright with folding phone technologies. For those who are looking for a phone that is different than the rectangular screen slabs we’re used to, the wait ends, because the Motorola Razr is now available for pre-booking at RelianceDigital.in.
