Motorola e40 – A whole lot of Moto, for the price

The Motorola e40 is a new phone, priced at under the Rs. 10,000 mark. It isn’t very expensive, by most modern smartphone pricing standards, but as far as most people’s requirements of a phone go, the e40 does a lot more than you would expect. It is a large device, has a ton of storage, a hefty battery and more. So, the question stands, is this among the best phones for most people, or a secondary phone? We hope to answer those questions.

Motorola is one of the brands adopting processors from the upcoming manufacturer Unisoc. The e40 runs the Unisoc T700, an octa-core processor that is a combination of a dual-core A75 set and a hexa-core unit. The processor is custom-made for Motorola and is claimed to be up to 38 per cent faster than another similarly ranged Unisoc processor. The Motorola e40 also run a G52 GPU, which should help with graphics-intensive applications and games. The phone should run most mainstream apps seamlessly. The device also ships with 4 GB of RAM, which is sufficient and multitasking between them should be easy too. The device even ships with 64 GB of storage, which is a lot for installing all your favourite apps and storing your favourite music and videos. However, the option of installing a microSD always is present, and the Motorola e40 can support micro SD cards as large as 1 TB. That is impressive storage for a phone that costs about Rs. 10,000.

The Max Vision HD+ screen spans 6.5 inches which is quite large for a phone at this price. It runs a resolution of 720 x 1600, which is ample for most users. What’s more, it is an IPS panel, so it should render colours brilliantly, and viewing angles should also be good. This is handy, when you have the phone on your desk at an angle, and you will not need to pick it up each time you need to look at the screen. It is also surprising that Motorola has implemented a 90 Hz display on the e40. Higher refresh rate displays are a thing on phones way pricier than the e40, so this is a welcomed feature. The higher refresh rate makes scrolling through newsfeeds and apps a joy. Things appear and feel snappier too.

Moving on to the cameras, the rear camera uses a 48 MP sensor which is great for clicking all kinds of photographs, but it is aided by two other optical sensors, a 2 MP depth camera and a 2 MP macro camera. The cameras combine capabilities to offer you a range of creative possibilities. There is also a LED flash at the rear if you need to shoot photos in low-light scenarios. All-in-all, this is a capable camera setup, it is both functional and fun, with a range of portrait and HDR modes available at your disposal. The front-facing camera uses an 8MP sensor, which is great for selfies and for video calls.

The battery is massive too, scaling 5,000 mAh, a lot more than a lot of phones above the Motorola e40’s price bracket. The phone charges using a Type-C port, using a 10 W charger. Motorola claims a 40-hour battery life under their test profiles. The Type-C port fortunately, does not have to be used with headphone adapters. Motorola has a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack for those who prefer using wired earphones and headphones.

Bluetooth 5.0 is an option for connecting wireless sound solutions, and Motorola e40 also has 802.11g for wireless networking. Other standard features are the fingerprint scanner for quickly unlocking the device without annoying pins and swipe gestures. There is even a dedicated Google Assistant button which invokes the voice assistant, so you can control smart devices around the home, or ask it any question, take notes, or add appointments.

The Motorola e40 is also built to last. It is made of plastic, but it weighs about 198 g despite its large size and battery. It is also rated as IP52, so it is water resistant, so you are unlikely to damage it with accidental spillage or using it in light rains. Other neat little features exist, like a notifications LED which is forgotten on so many smartphones today. Gestures are supported that let you quickly load the camera, turn on the flashlight, or using the fingerprint swipe to quickly glance at the notifications.

It even runs Android 11, and unlike other manufacturers, you get a clean Android experience. Little to no extra apps are installed so you won’t have to spend days trying to customize and clean it up.

The Motorola e40 is a smart choice for a secondary phone, a gift, or just an affordable every day-use phone. So, if you have your mind made up over the Motorola e40, why wait?
