How NFC Met My Mother

Curiosity knows no age. Amit’s mom has always been curious about anything new in tech and keeps pestering him to teach her the latest so that she may flaunt it with her clique. Last time it was on how to make a WhatsApp call and she was all ecstatic to use this feature. Recently, while she was at the airport to see of a friend she overheard a couple talking and when one of them wanted to share something they liked in their phone, she noticed the couple merely tapped their handsets and exclaimed “got it! Thanks”…that made her curious how could they do so? She however shrugged it off as something not significant but was nevertheless curious. Some days later at a social gathering she overheard two people having a conversation on health recipes, and in the course of their conversation they even spoke on sharing those recipes with each other. She thought they were sharing the videos via WhatsApp or Bluetooth but, what happened next startled Amit’s mom. They shared the video by just tapping their phone against each other. She couldn’t believe what she saw and was flabbergasted on seeing it. After pondering over it with amazement she assumed it to be a new device in the market. Her excitement to share this with her son knew no bounds that’s the kind of person she is. If she happens to come across anything that astounds her she shares it with her geeky son. And this time, she was more than eager to reach home and tell him this. So, with all enthusiasm she narrated the entire episode to Amit, “Beta, you know at the gathering today, I saw two people sharing some videos on the latest health recipe by just tapping their phones! I think it’s probably a new phone with some latest feature”. Amit smiled at his mother’s innocence and said, “Ma, that’s not a new phone but, a new technology called NFC– (near field communication). It establishes radio communication between two devices when they are tapped, touched or held close to each other and that’s when you can share files. This technology is available for certain Android and iOS phones. Do you know ma, even your Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro has this feature?” On hearing this, his mom immediately looked for the NFC option on her phone. On seeing her fidgeting around for a while Amit explained how she could find out if her phone supports NFC technology. “Ma, all you have to do is go to the

Settings option on your phone -> tap on connections-> tap on NFC and payment option ->tap on the toggle to enable or activate NFC->it automatically enables the Android Beam (it is a built-in feature in Android mobile operating system that allows data to be transferred via near field communication (NFC))->Tap on it and pay or connect it with other NFC enabled devices.

But, before sharing any data there are certain things you need to do:

  • You need to open the data that you want intend to share (audio, video, contact etc.)
  • You must place the devices back against each other
  • On doing this, you and the other individual will receive a confirmation that your devices are detected.
  • Now if you are sending a data you will notice that your screen will shrink considerably, don’t panic that’s when you will be notified to tap on the android beam.
  • When the beaming process is completed you will receive a notification stating the same.

He even told her how she could connect her phone to the speaker with just a tap and play songs to create a perfect ambience for the next house party or kitty party. Not just that, the next time she could even make payments at restaurants or at shopping malls with this technology. She did worry about the security aspect but Amit the geek that he is, explained that the payment procedure was as secured as the traditional card swiping process. Hearing all this, Amit’s mom was awestruck by how this NFC technology worked. Excitedly curious she decided to try her hand at using NFC for the very first time so she decided to tap it on their NFC-enabled speaker. She simply tapped the phone against the speaker and there her favorite track started playing on the speaker. She was not only thrilled but also delighted at what NFC could help her achieve – be it share, play music and even pay for purchases. The very thought of not having to be worried about carrying cash around in the purse or the pain of remembering credit and debit card pin numbers anymore. And it was not just her but Amit too was rest assured that she wouldn’t call frantically to confirm the PIN numbers for her cards or complain how unusable the speaker is. Is your mom, dad, sibling or your friend as curious as Amit’s mom? So, today when you sit to spend time with them do ask them to check if they have an NFC-enabled phone. If yes, then show them how they can make use of this feature and enjoy shopping, sharing data or listen to their favorite tracks with just a tap.
