Buying guide to Electric Shavers

If you’re someone who refuses to leave home without a proper shave, then you also know that using a shaving brush, cream and a razorblade can get a little annoying. Electric shavers are the simplest solution to all your early morning blues and woes. We’ve all been curious to know more about how shavers worked but have never found all the answers. This guide is all about knowing what makes a good shaver and how easy it is to use one.

Electric shavers or Trimmers?

If you’re looking for a trimmer, remember that it’s a completely different product from a shaver. A shaver gets you a really close shave, and it’s a replacement for the traditional razorblade. A trimmer on the other hand is for a rough, trimmed looked, or what you would use for a haircut instead of visiting the local saloon. Although, some shavers come with attachments that could let you use them as trimmers. We’ll talk about it a little later in this feature.

Given the choice, opt for wet shavers

Older electric shavers were dry shavers which means you would need to avoid using any water, foam or liquids around them. Of late, many of the models sold in the market are wet shavers. This means you can continue using shaving creams and foams with the product. However, it’s a good idea to verify this before you buy one. Wet shavers are typically also easier and better to maintain. Depending on the model, you should be able to replace the blades or detach them from the main unit and clean them thoroughly under a tap.

Choosing between corded and cordless models
Just like wet and dry shavers, most of today’s shavers are cordless. Corded models are more traditional and can be annoying, having a power cord swinging all over the place when you’re busy shaving or getting foam on your face. Unless there is a massive price difference, it’s always preferable to opt for the cordless model.

Choosing models that use batteries or have rechargeable batteries

What’s important to note is whether the shaver you are considering uses built-in rechargeable batteries or replaceable AA batteries. Shavers using inbuilt batteries tend to be a little lighter and more convenient, since you just need to plug the power cable for 8 to 10 hours and you’re sorted for the next week or two. Replaceable batteries are affordable, but they can make the shaver a little heavier and you still need to replace them every now and then. You can opt for rechargeable battery if you’d like.

Maintenance of blades and replacements

Most of the electric shavers in the market have a long operating life as far as the blades go. The rotating blades are also replaceable in most cases. It’s a good idea to check the price of the replacements and of course, availability. Most of the well-known brands claim their blades can last a year or two. Some long-time users even claim that using an electric shaver is more affordable in the long run compared to old-school, hand-held shaving blades. You are more likely to recover the cost of the electric shaver through its life.

Choosing models with trimmer attachments

Some of the more premium shaver models also come with a separate attachment that lets you it as a trimmer. This is particular handy if you want to go in for a slightly different look. That way you don’t need to purchase a dedicated trimmer like we spoke about at the beginning of the feature.

Weight and design are important factors too

Depending on the kind of model you choose, shavers may have large batteries or use heavier AA batteries. Check the weight of the product before you choose the model. Besides the weight, the size and the grip of the product are other important factors to consider. Access to the controls, compactness are some of the other things if you’re very particular.

Some other models may include a performance boost mode that speeds up the blades further, while some models come with clear indicators of the battery status. If you have suggestions on shavers and if you think we’ve missed out on something, don’t refrain from sending us a message below.
