With the popularity of Apple products, the need for a good audio dock is ever present. Docking stations are audio systems designed to work with devices, especially Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and the iPod. Not only can they be used to play music but also to charge them. The latest variants of docking stations (also called audio docks) have all kinds of unique designs and features, so there’s a lot to choose from.  We take a quick look at all of these features and help decide which of these features you need to keep your eyes on.

Types of docking stations

The type of docking station depends a lot on where you plan on using it. Docking stations are designed to look good on tables and nightstands. In most cases, they can be used in bedrooms or on a dining table, where setting up a large music system would be impractical. These usually have a louder output compared to the more compact, portable docking stations. Some docks can even be used in large living rooms. Most of these docks require an external power source to run.

There are also portable docking stations, which can be carried from one place to another. They are small and light, so they’re a good companion on long trips and to keep the entire family entertained on vacations. They fit perfectly in small bags, some also come with custom made sleeves and cases. Portable docks these days are usually powered by lithium ion batteries. Some might even use alkaline batteries, which is a great feature to have if you are constantly on the move and do not have the time to charge your docking station. Sticking to the Apple’s current product line-up, most manufacturers have docking stations that are compatible with the new Lightning connector, seen on the latest iPhones and iPads. There are some docking stations that are still compatible with the older 30-pin connector. You can always resolve the issue with the help of an adaptor. Still, it’s recommended that you go in for a dock that is compatible with the generation of devices.

Wireless connectivity

If you don’t want to keep your device constantly connected to the dock at all times, then it’s important to look for one with wireless features. Most of the docks today come with Bluetooth capability which allows you to play music wirelessly from a smartphone or tablet. Others also have NFC capabilities that can connect to your devices by just placing or touching them with the speaker. Some docking stations also support AirPlay, which allows you to connect it to your home network and play music from other Apple devices connected to the same network.

Design

Docking stations today have unique and stylish designs. Portable docking stations are designed to be sturdy and lightweight; some even have a foldable design that helps save space in your backpack. Standard docking stations used in homes and offices are meant to be kept indoors and are hence designed more to match the aesthetics of your room. Most of them have elegant and simple looks, but there are others that come in funky colours and eye catching designs.

Some docking stations are specifically designed for iPhones and iPods and aren’t meant to be connected to an iPad. Some on the other hand, have a flexible design and can not only be used with all the Apple devices, but can also allow you to tilt the screen in horizontal and vertical alignment. It’s a good feature to have if you are watching a movie or playing a game on your device. These are some of the things to look out for.

Inputs, outputs and drivers

Most docks have an auxiliary audio input port, which allows you to play music from all other devices such as MP3 players, smartphones, laptops and DVD players. Some docks also have a video output port, which can be used to connect it to your large screen TV and play videos on it from your iPhone or your iPad. The number of drivers and their performance in a speaker can make all the difference in the sound. Most docking stations have two speakers that deliver a good stereo sound. If you like listening to bass heavy songs, then it’s better to select one which also has a separate driver dedicated for the low frequencies.

Number of controls, FM Radio, Clock

Docking stations usually have very few buttons, which makes them all the more easy to use. Some just have the volume controls, while others add a little to the functionality with the play/pause and the fast forward and rewind button. Remote controls can usually be seen with high-end docking stations. They are usually small and have very few buttons on them.

Apart from just playing your personal music collection, audio docks also support FM radios. This means you can also enjoy popular songs from your favourite radio stations. Display screens on docking stations are usually so you can use them as a digital clock display. Some of these docks have colour LED screens that can also be used to play videos.

Apart from that you can also use them as morning alarms. There are a few docking stations that are designed to be used as clocks on the nightstand right next to the bed.

The performance of a docking station can only be judged by listening to it. You can however; get a brief idea of the docking station’s output by comparing certain specifications such as watts and frequency range. The power rating of an audio system will help you to understand the speaker’s output in terms of loudness. The frequency range is another one of those things that can give you some idea of the performance. After all, a good docking station is not only the one that can offer all the above mentioned features but also sounds right based on your personal preference.
