Asus ZenBook 14 – Ultra slim and powerful

Ultrabook laptops are thin and light devices with a premium design. However, their compact nature and constraints often restrict them from delivering high-tier performance. The new Asus ZenBook 14 challenges this. It is one of the first ultra-slim laptops to house Intel’s 11th generation processors and a new and powerful, integrated graphic solution. Asus claims the new hardware makes the ZenBook 14 one of the most powerful laptops in its class.

The Asus ZenBook 14 BM701TS is one of the slimmest and lightest laptops of 2020. It is 13.9 mm in thickness, and it weighs just 1.2 kg, which means you can easily carry it around during your daily commute. The laptop offers a strong construction despite its lightweight and thin design. It is made of aluminium-alloy, and it uses Asus’ concentric circle designs for a premium look. The device also offers military-grade durability with its MIL-STD-810 standard which means the laptop should survive accidental drops and knocks.

The Asus ZenBook 14 BM701TS comes with two USB-A 3.2 ports, which ultralight and thin laptops rarely offer these days. The device also houses two Thunderbolt 4 ports, that offers up to 40 Gbps data transfer speeds. This means, transferring large files and backing up the laptop will take significantly less time. The Thunderbolt 4 ports can also charge the laptop, and you can also use them to connect two 4K monitors and an 8K monitor. The device also has an HDMI port for connecting a projector or TV. The new ZenBook 14 lacks a LAN port, but Asus bundles a USB-A-to-LAN adaptor for wired network connectivity.

The Asus ZenBook 14 sports the Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU, which is one of the high-tier chips of the 11th generation lineup. This CPU has 4-cores, and it is based on the 10nm fabrication process that helps it deliver a top speed of 4.7 GHz. Asus claims the processor offers huge performance and battery life improvements over the older 10th generation lineup. It also brings Wi-Fi 6 connectivity that offers better wireless performance in congested areas like offices and malls.

The new 11th generation processor also brings major graphics improvements. It comes with Intel’s Xe integrated graphics that offers nearly twice the graphics performance as the last year’s Intel Iris Pro integrated graphics. This means the Asus ZenBook 14 will offer more frames per second while playing games such as Borderlands 3, Far Cry New Dawn, and Hitman 2 at 1080p resolution. The improved graphics performance will also let you use image and video editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop, PhotoScape X, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects more smoothly. It’s no gaming laptop but the improved graphics solution makes it a lot more capable.

The laptop will also let you seamless multitask with 16GB of RAM. It comes with a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD, and it has an additional SSD slot for future storage expansion. Asus has also managed to put a 67Wh battery in the laptop and it promises up to 21 hours of battery life.

The Asus ZenBook’s 14-inch display comes with narrow bezels for a modern look. It runs a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, and its IPS LED panel helps deliver wider viewing angles. The display supports 100 per cent sRGB which means it is precisely calibrated for colour correction work. The screen offers a 16:9 aspect ratio which is suitable for watching movies, and it also promises good outdoor visibility with 300 nits of peak brightness.

The device also has a 4-element IR camera that sits just above the display. The camera works with the Windows Hello feature letting you unlock the ZenBook using your face. The face unlock feature will also work in the dark thanks to its IR sensors, and Asus claims they have also made software optimisation to improve the image quality.

The ZenBook 14 BM701TS comes with an edge-to-edge backlit keyboard. It includes important keys such as Page Up, Page Down, End and even a bunch of hotkeys despite its compact design. The keys are well-spaced, and they offer 1.5 mm of key travel to make typing easy and comfortable. The laptop also has a large trackpad that makes scrolling and multitasking easy. It comes with Asus’ NumberPad 2.0, that is activated by tapping the top-right corner of the touchpad. Ultrabook laptops usually don’t come with a numerical pad, and this feature is very useful when you are entering numbers in a spreadsheet.

The laptop runs on Windows 10 Home OS, and it comes with with a lifetime subscription of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019. It gives you access to Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without paying an extra penny. The laptop also comes pre-installed with the MyAsus app that offers a bunch of handy features. It lets you choose ZenBook 14’s fan profile, adjust the screen’s colour temperature, and you can even use it to link your smartphone to the laptop. The Asus ZenBook 14 is one of 2020’s most powerful Ultrabook laptops.
