Apple product launches happen with a lot of buzz. They are surrounded by endless rumours, 3D renders and speculation about what to expect. However, this year’s iPad event surprised everyone. It was sudden, without any prior announcements, but it didn’t take much time to catch everyone’s attention. There are two new iPads – a model for students and office goers and a Pro model for performance-demanding users. Both iPads bring a lot to the table, from updated processors to design changes.

The iPad 10th generation is likely to be a more popular option among most users. It’s a 10-9-inch tablet that now comes in five colours – Space Grey, Starlight, Pink, Yellow and Purple. Apple has completely overhauled its design by removing the Home button and reducing the screen bezels. The device now has flat and rounded edges like the iPad Air, allowing for a comfortable holding position. Its power button doubles up as a Touch ID sensor, so you can easily unlock the device.

Apple continues to offer the Pro models in two screen sizes. The 11-inch model is 5.9 mm thick while the 12.9-inch model is 6.4 mm thick. Both models are lightweight and as portable as the older iPad Pros. Instead of Touch ID, the Pro variants use a TrueDepth camera with facial recognition capabilities. The camera is located at the top and is fast and easy to use. Both, the iPad 10th generation and Pro models use 100 per cent recycled aluminium, so they are sturdy and environmentally friendly. Apple says the new iPads are also the first ones to use recycled gold in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards.

The 10.9-inch iPad runs a resolution of 2360 x 1640 with a 264 ppi pixel density. It uses Apple’s tried-and-tested Retina Display panel, which is well-known for its life-like colours. The display also supports HDR10 content with an impressive dynamic range. It is perfect for watching content and playing games. Apple says the display supports 500 nits of brightness and has the True Tone feature that automatically adjusts the display temperature to match the lighting around you. It also supports the 1st generation Apple Pencil and comes with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, so you can takes notes without messing up the screen.

The 11-inch iPad Pro also uses the same Retina Display panel as the 10th-generation iPad. However, it can deliver up to 600 nits of brightness and comes with support for ProMotion display technology with a 120 Hz refresh rate. This makes the screen significantly responsive while scrolling and watching content. Since most new games also support higher frame rates, this feature will also make your gaming experience more immersive.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro has the best display technology you’ll ever find on any iPad. It comes with a mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR panel with a resolution of 2,732 x 2,048. This display is also very colour accurate, which makes it perfect for colour-correction projects. It supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, so creative users can work more precisely on apps like Adobe Fresco, Photoshop, Illustrator and Pixelmator. With iOS 16, Apple Pencil is now detected 12 mm above the display, so users can see a preview of their mark before they make it.

Apple says this display uses more than 10,000 LEDs and delivers up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness. It let users see the brightest of highlights and details, so they can work more accurately on their photo and video projects. This iPad also supports HDR and ProMotion technology, which means you can enjoy content and play games when you are not working.

The 10th generation iPad now sports Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset that was first used on iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models. The A14 offers nearly 20 per cent more performance than the older A13 chipset. It also has a 16-core Neural Engine, which claims to bring an 80 per cent boost to machine learning capabilities. All this means users can now run more high-end apps and games without performance hiccups. Apple has also increased the iPad’s RAM to 4 GB, and you can now choose between a 64GB and a 128GB variant.

The 2022 iPad Pro models also bring a huge performance leap. They now equip Apple’s M2 chipset, the same CPU that powers the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. The M2 is an 8-core CPU that is 15 per cent faster and provides 35 per cent more graphics performance than the M1. Apple says this iPad can now even smoothly handle demanding workflows, so be it editing massive photo and video libraries or handling complex designs using 3D modelling tools. With the M2 and its new media engine, the Pro model can also record ProRes videos.

The iPad 10th generation and iPad Pro 2022 ship with iPadOS 16 which brings tons of new features. One of the most notable ones is the Stage Manager feature which offers a new multitasking experience by automatically arranging apps and windows. The new OS also introduces a Freeform app for jotting down notes, sketching, drawing, and brainstorming ideas. The app also allows multiple users to work on the same Freeform board, where changes are synced in real-time.

This year’s iPad update has perfected these devices. The 10th generation iPad model got its much-awaited design update with the necessary power, making the device ideal for a wider range of users. The Pro model is now a bigger performance powerhouse and perfect for users who want MacBook-like power in a portable tablet.
