All-New MacBook Air – A MacBook for everyone

The Apple MacBook series were easy to grasp, a decade ago. The choices were simple. The MacBook Pro was the powerful machine and the MacBook Air became the affordable option for everyday use. Since the revival of the MacBook Air in 2018, the Air has gotten noticeably better. Carved out of a single aluminum block, the chassis, coupled with some powerful hardware and an incredible display, it has unquestionably become a very desirable laptop. However, the 2018 MacBook Air was a lot more expensive than the older models. In fact, the prices got a point where it was almost as expensive as an entry-level MacBook Pro.

Apple has decided to clear out this confusion, with the launch of the 2020 MacBook Air. The new MacBook takes all the positives from its predecessor, while shedding its expensive price tag. The new device is more affordable than ever, and it also comes with a bunch of new updates. Let’s take a look at what the new generation of MacBook Air has to offer.

A lot has changed under the hood of the new MacBook Air. It now sports the latest Intel 10th generation processors, which promise to provide a huge performance leap. You get an option of choosing between two processor models – a base variant with the Intel Core i3 CPU and a premium variant with Intel Core i5 processor. Both the processors support Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.5GHz. Apple doesn’t mention which variant of the 10th generation processor it uses. However, they claim, the new processors are twice as fast than the older CPUs.

Apple has kept 8GB RAM as standard on both the MacBook models. However, this time they have doubled the storage on the base variant. This means, the entry-level MacBook Air now comes with a 256GB SSD drive which is enough to store lots of movies and photos. If your daily usage requires more storage, you can choose the premium variant, which sports a 512GB SSD. Apple has also upgraded the GPU on the new MacBook Air. It now sports the new Intel Iris Plus GPU, to offer better performance while using software such as Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. With the upgraded GPU, the new MacBook Air can even support a 6K external display, including the Apple Pro Display XDR through one of its two Thunderbird 3 ports.

There aren’t too many changes to the display of the new MacBook Air. It comes with the same 13.3-inch Retina display with a screen resolution of 2560 x 1600. The screen is nearly bezel-less as before, so it offers a lot of working space. The Retina display has always been great at producing natural colors. It features Apple’s True Tone display technology, which automatically adjusts the white balance depending on the surrounding environment and lighting. You can easily spend hours on this display watching videos, photos and use productivity software without feeling any eye strain.

Apple has reworked the internals of the new MacBook Air, however, the externals stay the same. The device sports the same aluminum chassis design and it come in Silver, Space Grey and Gold options. The device is slightly thicker and heavier than the 2019 MacBook Air, but it is still incredibly portable and easy to carry around. Apple is using recyclable materials on the new MacBook Air, which means it is also more environment friendly.

The biggest change you’ll notice on the 2020 MacBook Air is its keyboard. Apple has decided to phase out its butterfly keyboard switches, as there were too many complaints. The new model now comes with Apple’s Magic Keyboard which was first introduced in the recent 16-inch MacBook Pro. It features a refined scissor key mechanism, which Apple says can provide reliability along with a responsive feedback. The keys are backlit as they were before, so you don’t have to fumble in the dark.

The 2020 MacBook Air features a large Force Touch trackpad, the same as the newer MacBook Pro models. Apple’s Taptic Engine provides a tactile feedback, replacing the feel of a physical button press. A larger trackpad means, you can quickly scroll through webpages, photos and documents. If you do a lot of image and video editing, you can quickly switch tools and navigate through video timelines. The trackpad also supports multi-touch gestures which makes multi-tasking and switching between apps easier.

The new MacBook Air also features the T2 fingerprint sensor, which is secure, and it lets you unlock the device, like an iPhone. You can also use the fingerprint sensor to authenticate protected documents and system settings. The Air ships with MacOS Catalina, which should make the device faster and smoother to use. The new OS has a Dark Mode option like before, which changes the look and feel of the UI. The biggest improvement in the OS is the Mac Catalyst, which lets you run iPad apps on your Mac. In addition to these, the OS also includes Auto-stacking and Multi-window tab support, which comes handy when you’re trying to be productive.

The MacBook Air is also strong in terms of connectivity. It sports two Thunderbird 3 ports, which can be used for high-speed data transfer. These ports can be also used to charge the device. The device also features Wi-Fi 802.11ac for stronger wireless connectivity along with Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting peripherals. The new Air should also sound amazing, as it features stereo speakers along with support for Dolby Atmos. The device ships with a 30W USB-C adaptor and Apple claims, the Air delivers up to 11 hours of battery life.

Buying the new MacBook Air is now more sensible, as it is affordable and more powerful than before. It is a premium device that offers a solid performance, which can handle nearly every task with ease. With the long-lasting OS support, the device can be a future-ready option that can last you years. The new MacBook Air should be coming soon.
